Google Talk

So the rumours are true. I still do not see an official announcement, but talk.google.com is up and running.

Lot of brownie points for google for using an open protocol like jabber and making it accessible for any jabber client. That’s right, you don’t even need to upgrade gaim to use the service. Now I hope Yahoo and MSN follow this model and make their protocols open soon.

A more important outcome of this is the that people will start re-mixing this open API’s and will come out with amazing tools and services like this one which mrinal developed couple of years ago or mixing buddy presense with google maps etc. And khorgath and nandu, if you guys are reading this, yeah gubber wins 🙂

Personally, this rocks. Works over HTTP over our firewall, which Y! messenger doesnt.

Just spoke to friends in Mumbai(<1 sec lag) and NY (3 sec lag), and I like what I see.

    Re: Check this!!!

You missed the point. gtalk is amazing because it’s built on open standards.

They are going to support SIP in some future release. Just watch this thing explode once they do that. Projects like Asterisk and SER are going to get more attention.

Assuming I have read the articles correctly, gtalk doesn’t interoperate with other jabber servers, is that right?

gtalk client itself is not a generic jabber client. But I’ve heard they have some plugin support through which they might add linkup with yahoo and msn at some point of time.

last I heard, voice wasn’t high priority on the gaim guys list. linphone does a good job of voice over SIP, and integrating it into gaim won’t be too hard. I’d evaluated it for doing Yahoo! voice in libyahoo2, but got held back by the patent.

Forgive my ignorance, but is the voice part of gtalk also an open standard? Is it part of the Jabber protocol? Could you write a voip client for talk.google.com yourself?
