Actually the shutter thingy is only 30 sec.. not even min. I used a cable release on my D200 with bulb mode to shoot this. I really wanted an all night one, but on D200, after 30 min, the CCD gets heated up and started to produce red flares. Infact this photo had those flares too which I removed in post-processing. I think either an high end DSLR like D2x or a film camera is needed for hours worth of long-exposure.

Btw are you good with shieldtails ? I found one there and I suspect its a new species..

Kalyan. was just wondering. why not take a snap every, say, 5 mins. and add up (OR mask)all the pictures.

I have a mode in my canon s2 funnily named intervalometer which i used for the time-lapsed thing at Manhattan. Am planning to try out the ORing thing now.

Kalyan your pic’s exif reads 18 odd mins exposure. Nice shot though cannot dream of capturing such a thing in Bangalore atleast.

Btw I picked up the DVD’s from your friend tomorrow. He was saying that he will not be going back to the UK.. so you want me to keep it here or pass it to someone ?

(thanks anyway.. itching to go home and see them 😀 )

  6. shivakumar_l · March 21, 2007 Reply

naa he is not the one who bought it … i passed it on thru someone else.
all that you need to do is – see enjoy – make a copy for yourself and to harsha also and give the original to Jayanth Sharma he will take care of the rest.
go home dude — take rest — relax watch the 5 DVDs aramse learn new thinsg from the master 😉

    Nice

My first such attempt was ruined by batteries dying on me and since then (or since winter started) haven’t gone out to shoot again.

I will have to check with you about those post processing tips to get rid of red flares – some day over chat.

    Nice picture 🙂

Can’t say anything but the non-technical “wow, that must have been difficult!” to the photograph…but to this comment of yours:

Btw I picked up the DVD’s from your friend tomorrow.

I must say….how did you manage to do something in the past tense…in the future?? Looks like the time exposure has got into your deeds too!

Oh it is awesome. Took my breath away. do you have a higher resolution copy elsewhere?

  10. Anonymous · March 21, 2007 Reply

Nice one.. Wondering how you could do that. Have to try atleast a 15 min with the 350D.

btw, what happened to your plan to come down here ?

Is this feature available for the D70 ?

Hey there, no I amn’t but Chaitra in Kartik’s lab is as close to one as you will find. I’ll send you his e-mail id…The star streaks seem too long for 30 secs, whats your focal length?

    Re: yea

It has a B mode but no cable release. You click once with the remote to open the shutter, the second time to shut it in B mode. Or it shuts on its own in 30 mins

    Re: yea

What is B mode ? The only way to get more than 30 sec shutter is to use the IR remote in D70

    Re: yea

Errr. its 30 sec.. not 30 min.

Oh I picked it up along with that big lens. I still prefer the colors from the D70 though.

This is full-frame. I had a GPS unit, so knew the exact south and setup the camera to suit that.

B = Bulb Mode! Coming from you I had to go back and check :-O

D70 has a bulb mode which you can enter only if you are in a the manual setting program. The shutter remains open as long as the button is pressed down. I used it for cleaning the CCD till I discovered the mirror lock

    Aha Sorry 🙂

Yeah the IR remote lets you take your hands off the camera.. 🙂

I don’t know the D200, the D70 can stay open for 30 mins. Its the setting I used for my Orion over B’lore image…besides your exif says abt 18-19 mins, like someone else pointed out at 17mm, which sounds reasonable for the length of the star streak. Just check it once….I’ve sent you Chaitra’s mail.

I wonder what it’ll look like if you take a frame every night at the same time in the same place, then you should be able to see the movement of stars due to the revolution of the earth and not the rotation. 🙂 What do you think it should look like?

    Simply superb….

    this is awesome…

Interesting idea.. but that will mean I will need to leave the tripod behind, rooted to the ground. Even slight change in position will ruin the whole thing.

did you get a chance to climb Anai Mudi?

I’m going back there this weekend.. so hope to do it on this trip.

    Wonderful!!!

I just had a look into your sites when i was surfing in the net. really its awesome and i dont have words to xpress my liking towards these photographs. Good work done. I love nature and appreciate people who love it. My best wishes for you to continue this wonderful job. I have not seen such keen pictures (like road accident – that butterfly) and I am glad that an Indian photographer is capable of doing such a stuffy job. Hat’s up to you my friend and I wish u could contribute much more to this field. This is one of my suggestions. plz do concentrate on flowers and endangered species as well
