    Some answers

    A few clarifications –

    1. Male kingcobras don’t always abandon the female after mating. Males sometimes “spouse-guard” to make sure no other male mates with the female. In one case we observed the male remain with the female well past the mating season. We don’t know if all males do it under ideal circumstances – i.e., no human disturbance. In this particular case, we think he didn’t mate with the female at all and since she was going into a shed, she didn’t want to see him.

    2. King cobras are not cobras at all. The scientific name of the king is Ophiophagus hannah, and not Naja naja.

    3. When snakes shed their skins, their eyes turn milky because the body secretes a liquid that separates the old skin from the fresh one. Their normally excellent eyesight is compromised and they can just make out movement. So they hide in a dark burrow, thicket, somewhere safe and out of sight of predators.

    4. Not all snakes have poor vision. Burrowing snakes have pretty bad eyesight, tree snakes and diurnal snakes (incl. the king) can see pretty well, nocturnal snakes see little more than movement. So if you are caught in close quarters with a cobra, you stand stock still and it will not know you are even there; whereas if it is a king cobra, you run like hell. Frankly, I wouldn’t wager that human reflexes are faster than a king cobra’s. So make of that advice what you will.

    5. Snakes do not have ears (as we know them) but they are capable of hearing low frequency air borne sounds. The lower jaws of some snakes act as “ears” picking up ground vibrations. Apparently some of these bones evolved to become the bones of the “inner ear” of mammals.

    6. Snakes use their tongues to pick scent particles from the air. There are two cavities on the roof of their mouths where the tips of the forked tongue rest when withdrawn, called Jacobson’s Organs. These analyse the particles and the snake then figures out what the scent is. Some snakes will thus track the trail of a rat they have envenomated without getting confused by the presence of other rats’ scent trails. Almost all of them can smell their way to water. So their sense of smell is more acute than most other animals.

    7. I’m not sure about all animals being colour blind. I know frugivorous birds can see red. I think some animals have colour vision of some kind – although it may not be the same as ours. In fact I remember vaguely that several animals have a colour range beyond ours – extending into the infras and the ultras at both ends of the spectrum. As far as we know all snakes are colour blind having evolved from burrowing lizards. But noone has done any tests to find out.

    And most importantly

Don’t sweat the fact that it is “partial” or “biased”. The insurance and drug companies spend millions and millions of dollars to promote “their side” of the story, but none of them promote Michael Moore. So don’t worry if his stuff seems one-sided. HE doesn’t have to be “fair” or “unbiased” – only real policy makers need to be like that. YOU can do your own web research. But Michael Moore shows us some VERY important human realities. Allow them to touch you. Don’t worry if this is not the whole story. How on earth could the whole story be told in 90 minutes (or whatever) of narrative film?? If you want pure objectivity, go to the World Health Organization or something like that. In MM’s movie, just show some human decency towards the stories you see!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
