Presidents Visit

The photo exhibition at BR hills did happen and I did get a chance to interact with the President of India, though it did not happen the way I wanted it to. The security at the place was a mess and all the press folks had formed a circle around him, which make things really ugly.

But anyway, he really loved the photographs and his personal favorite was this photograph of the very charming soliga girl (which I had photographed last week) and the mother tiger. He was really inspirational to listen to and believe it or not, he almost thinks and works like a 10 year old. He spoke about how he loves the forests of BR hills and about how he was very happy to see it almost unchanged in the last 15 years.

I also got to photograph an exciting new species at BR hills. I’ll post about it later. For now, however, it’s back to the grind

Wow!… Had heard from about simultaneous exhibitions of your photographs…both at BR hills and at Bangalore. Never imagined that the President was visiting BR Hills!

This is one president of India who I can totally repect, without an iota of doubt! There have been learned and erudite presidents before…but a person as apolitical and so down to earth…he has all my respect!

The pictures (need I say this) are wonderful. The Soliga girl makes me feel like chucking the corporate life that I am part of now, and going back to my first love…Anthropology!!

You should try to hear him speak. No pre-made speeches and he really did his homework before coming there.. and spoke to everyone and cracked jokes like an MC on stage.

This soliga girl was really something. She was so photogenic and was so natural when I was photographing her

Absolutely! He was in our college around a month or two after he became the president in 2002 and guess i had the same thoughts then…

    expected more details…

With so much happeening out there at BR hills, i guess many of us expected a more detailed account 🙁
Anyways.. had been to the exhibition at Taj, but wasnt too impressed with it. I wonder why they chose only the swallows and the butterfly snap from your collection, when there where so many better ones.

    Congrats once again dude.

Any idea about the head count of these tribals in BRT ?
The way these tribals and wild animals balance each other is simply amazing, except some odd cases reported in Nagerhole.I would like to drop in there and study more about them

  11. admin · October 17, 2006 Reply

There are close to 2000 of them in BR hills and MM hills put together.

the picture of the “Soligal” is lovely! I hope you took some snaps of Dr Kalam looking at your snaps? Or wasn’t it allowed by security?

Waiting for that detailed chat we are always going to have in the future.

    🙂

    Dr Kalam

He hasn’t done PhD, has only honorary doctorates and he does not prefer to call himself “Dr Kalam”

Kalyan, looked up some of your pictures: You are talented! I’ve been to B.R. Hills to visit Balu’s center (SVYM); impressive community out there, as you seem to have experienced too. Thanks for sharing your appreciation via the Web. — Nikhil, http://www.nikhilmoro.com
