White balance

Jeffrey Friedl has written an excellent overview on the Digital camera white balance.

Most of the photographers I know (even professional ones) do not understand what White balance is and they just leave it in auto most of the time, without touching it again in post-processing. I spend few min on each of my photograph to get the right balance and right temperature in post-processing as it makes a BIG difference in how your photograph will look finally.

White Balance makes a world of a difference to us too! We do a lot of microscopy of human and animal tissue for diagnostic and research purposes, and unless u white balance, you can get a completely different color and that can mean a different diagnosis or result ( research). Most of these new generation microscopes ( each costing a million dollars) have so many features that it takes months just to understand how they work best!

Like always, That’s why you need a SLR in the first place *raw*

When I was using the Coolpix, I was cheating a bit. Since it would give me instant feedback with my set settings, I would adjust the temperature.. till it looks just right for me. And if I remember correctly, that camera actually had raw support 🙂

But yeah, I rather not shoot if I’m not shooting in raw 🙂

That is interesting. Since the microscopy is under controlled conditions, wouldn’t the lights be pre-caliberated?
