Eye Pecker

The pictures of the Vine Snake were my fav from my Kudremukh Trip last week. Over all we saw about 13 new species of snakes (most of them dead, run over on the road). We saw this little fella crossing the road and managed to save it life from a passing truck.

The Green Vine Snake is sometimes called as the ‘Eye Pecker’ because people believe it pecks humans eyes. In this picture it was quite agitated and was trying bite us off. Another amazing thing about this snake is that it can extend half of its body into midair when crossing a branch. I managed to capture another great wallpaper photograph of it standing in the air. And guess who’s hand it was standing on when I took this picture ? ;)

Poisonous or otherwise, I have a morbid fear of snakes. The handler must be one brave person :-)

  3. admin says:

So did I for a long time, but after spending enough time with snake folks, I can handle them pretty OK. Infact in this trip, got a learn a lot about snakes and how to handle them.

  4. Wow.. amazing.. but I would never be able to hold or even touch the snake.. how do you guys manage?

  7. chandrahasa says:

Those pics look awesome… btw how easy is it to tell if a snake is poisonous. They are creepy creatures but look beautiful at a safe distance :P

If you’re in India, it’s easy, just remember only 6 known species are fatal to man and stay away from them: Cobra, King Cobra, Common Krait, Saw-scaled viper, Bamboo Pit-viper, Russell’s viper.

If it’s a new species then… god save you.

He forgot to mention there was a very experienced snake handler (Harsha the naturalist from his earlier posts )who was with us.And the fact is after seeing this guy you just had to touch him touching him.

The shots are bloody brilliant. The “wallpaper shot” is a total stunner. And Noel I would’ve frozen stiff pulling off something like that.

  20. noelladsa says:

Lol you don’t know the half of it.So when Harsha ( the naturalist ) gently eased the snake on my hand it was all fine.
And the snake seemed pretty comfy..then suddenly it was lifting its head (top body ) up and looking at me straight in the eye.I think it must have been soon after this photo was taken.
I pretty much could not hold its stare and had to turn my head away just waiting to be bitten.

  29. anomalizer says:

You can tell me that snake is not poisonous, Lord Shiva was standing next to you after hynotizing the thing and that you had 43 anti-venom shots before doing that and still I would say..

    ARE YOU NUTS!!!

  30. khorgath says:

So who was it that was taking a snap of you taking a snap? The snake in that shot looks… well, sorta surreal.

I usually open the .nef in Nikon capture, and 1st thing I do is adjust the white balace.. a.k.a temperature. Then I sharpen the pic as Nikon Capture sharpen is the best I’ve seen so far. Then I do bit of playing with level and contrast and save it as jpg. I sometimes Open it in photoshop when there are too many shadows etc.

I use gimp to resize them to the web :)

  33. admin says:

heh yeah.. was pretty relaxed for most part of it.

  34. apaurusheya says:

    Holy Cow!

    That’s an astounding capture! Kudos!

  35. Kalyan, Awesome…good to see you back…

  36. arucard2 says:

105mm Nikkor Micro? have heard that lens is the greatest for Macro photography.

I am on the hunt for a good RAW processing tool. Photoshop CS doesn’t support the RAW output from my camera. Neither does Gimp for Mac. :(
The pros out there suggest C1 or Bibble. /me thinking of switching to CS2, it does support the 350D RAW format.

  37. arucard2 says:

thanks for sharing the info. :)
    n000bie learning. :-D

  38. brokentooth says:

Wow, that’s just a stunning couple of photos.

  39. inthing says:

Great photos, after a long time !
I have heard my grandmom also say the same abt these snakes, aparently they peck at your eyes.

  40. Anonymous says:

Fabulous as always. Both images are truly art, regardless of content.

  41. kankothi pamboo.. beautifully captured.. these snakes can get fidgety and bite though the bite is not harmful..

glad u both are having a good time..

  42. admin says:

They do have rear fangs and their poison it seems is same as that of a cobra, but yeah its very light and the worest you have (if it bites and if its rear fangs get into your skin ) is a mild headache.

  43. coreid says:

Wow! Thanks for the wallpaper size image!

  44. ashwinne says:

    Dead!
