Finally a tiger in the wild

For the 1st time in my life, I managed to see a Tiger in the wild this morning. It was quite far, but we got to seem him for a full min. He was resting, saw us for a while, gave a huge growl and was off into the bushes. Since it was 7 in the morning with lost of mist, this is what I could manage.

    taken from a height ?

Were you on an elephant or in a bus ?
I wouldnt be in tiger territory on foot.

People get chased by elephants every now and then and on bad days people do get killed. I dont know much about BRT, but in other places where I’ve lived, there were reports of elephants causing harm to human life once in a while and it was mostly a mistake by the human, either drunk or too careless. When you’re in elephant country you need to be on the alert all the time, they dont want to kill humans, but when a human gets too close unknowingly, they tend to “defend” themselves.

A few weeks ago, wild elephants killed 3 people hardly 20 kilometers from Bangalore, but it was a case of a mother trying to defend it’s calf.

There have been no cases of leopards or tigers even mauling humans for years, they are shy animals and tend to stay away from humans. But then again, if you get too close to them, you’re as good as dead.

Honestly, the only animals to fear in the Indian Jungle are Elephants and poisonous snakes and both can cause harm to you only if you are careless.

Tigers are really shy, it’s pretty safe. ( If they are not in a bad mood that is :p )

    thanks yathin. that was informative!

Lucky you! Once when we went to the Madhumalai forest, I was praying I’d see a tiger or something, but alas, there were none!! All we saw were some tamed Elephants and the usual deers, rabbits, etc.

Also the bison’s here. They can get nasty while you are on foot, but its very safe while you are on a jeep

    bears

hey u shud also be on the lookout for bears there….
when i was trekking in BR hills a few months ago a huge black bear crossed our path something like 15mts away from us!! Boy was that scary!!

hey btw are the soligas still getting caught for doing wrong stuff (like selling animal products n all )??
coz last time when i had been there some 3-4 of them were caught and made to sit in a row with their loot in front of them…

and also what is that doctors name who is helping these tribals there?? kinda forgotten his name also….he is pretty popular in that area…u shud go meet him also….it’ll be a good experience..

anyway have fun there and be careful… :)

  18. I did dream of living my life in the wild … but have too many other things on my mind too …hehehe … cool! that you can report from there … and yeah! the book idea somebody offered is a nice one too … take care

What if the tiger’s new year resolution is to shed its inhibitions ? :-)

Tigers generally don’t attack if you are looking directly at it, they like to creep up from behind. Rice farmers in tiger country like to wear masks on the back of their heads with painted eyes.

is going to be out of a job, since no one will want to visit the jungles. ;) We don’t want that, do we?

The reasons for this is well known. Tigers kill by breaking the spinal cord usually, unlike lions/leopards/cheetahs which go for the throat and strangle their quarry.

Also, the dual face confuses tigers and they feel it’s better for them not to attack a strange being with 2 heads!

I’ll keep that in mind. Till now, Gaurs epitomised calm, peace and gentleness.

    godd bless Dr.Sudarshan… :)

Re: taken from a height ?

Yep it does, other than elephants no other animal in the south indian jungles stay where they are when they smell/hear a human. They all know how bad humans are. :D

BRT = Biligiri Rangaswamy Temple. It’s near Kollegal and a former bastion of Veerappan, and also one of the most pristine forests of India.

    Tigers

In about 10 years tigers will be extinked. Some people are saving tigers and taking them fromthe wild to teach them how to servive in the wild. Then they take them to Africa and let them hunt there self. The beagled tiger is the tiger shown now.The tigers at the circus are the tigers they save the only enomy the tiger can’t face is the hunter. But the people that rescue the tigers teach them to be nice around humans. They live with humans so they know how to act. There not evil at all there nice. There trying to save all of them. There’s only about 5,000 tigers left!I f you want to look at this tiger go to http://www.kalyan.livejournal.com to see the tiger.Watch discoverychanel to get alot of research on animals.
