EVM

I voted last week.
It was an Electronic Voting Machine (EVM).
It does not have a paper trail.
Something smelled fishy.
I do not trust machines.

Did you trust any of the candidates?

Its more easy to tamper computerized things than the traditional paper ones!!

and there is no way to re-count or re-verify what went on.

    exactly!!! cons of technology 🙁

Seriously, I too am of the same opinion, ballot paper for me. Hell, they can’t even get your name right on your voting card, and my name appeared thrice in the “computerized” voting list.

Heh, heh, funny comment for a “computer” person to make! But I agree with you. EVM’s do smell strongly of fish!

    Recount .. yes. Verify/Reverify … no

Verification is only possible when the vote is cast.

Once you lose the capacity to verify a vote, machine and paper have the same advantages (or disadvantages) when it comes to recounting.

On counts of fraud prevention, machines definitely work better. More on the EVM and its fraud prevention -> http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Indian_voting_machines.

I agree its easier, but then cheats will find a way …
What I am saddened by is that just 44% people voted in urban Bangalore.

Its just cheats.. am more worried about someone paying Rs 1000 Crores to someone induce some bugs in the controllers.

its not computers.. its just the paranoia kicking in

    Re: Recount .. yes. Verify/Reverify … no

My issue was the fact that there is no correlation between my name on the list and me voting with the machine. They are 2 diff process which i do not agree with.

    Re: Recount .. yes. Verify/Reverify … no

There’s actually no connection between you (the human being), and your name on the list either. My dad has three separate entries, for example.

While you’re at it, you should also raise privacy concerns about the voters’ list being in the public domain!

Of course I did, but my hands are tied because postal balloting is not allowed in India!

And, the same person can give 1000 crores to induce bugs in the paper based system. When you are that determined to subvert a system, the system constituents don’t really matter.

Plus neither system is strong enough to resist an insider job. I would argue that the paper system has already been broken into…

    yeah

yeah.. its not so easy to tweak into the EVM , i am one of the designer of the latest gen. EVM . i was working @ BEL for a while.. ! I was involved in designing of the firmware which goes into that too..! All I can say is its not easy to tweak 🙂 !!
Saying this, i agree with kalyan..”My issue was the fact that there is no correlation between my name on the list and me voting with the machine”. I guess population is the main hinderance , its tuff to implement this with the existing technology…as we cannot design to have EVM for a particular list.

I can see a positive side to EVMs.. You’ll save trees by not using paper.
Imagine how many trees for each election which comes more than once in 5 years! 🙂

Then there are dropping fire in the ballot box to screw up the votes..

    Exactly my feeling

I was wondering standing at the machine, if the buttons are properly configured.
Its just a sheet of paper fixed on it, which says press this button for Cand-A.
What if they configured button 1 for Cand A and the paper fixed on it shows Button2 for Cand-A ???
