The Curious King

My first day with the king went quite well. I sat in clear view in front of the pair all day (9 hours straight) with my cameras. The female was mostly in the borrow and the male spent 9 hours of the day staring at me.

He tried to mate with the female in the middle and they were in this head-over-head position for quite sometime, till the female got bored and went back to the den.

The king cobra seems to have a thing for watching things around him. He kept his eye on us most of the day and once in a while he would check on the female. We even found him getting distracted by some birds which were flying more than 100m away (a new scientific record of sorts).

Another long day coming up tomorrow and I’ll mostly post again after 2 -3 days. This is going to be one exciting weekend.

    Hey Kalyan!

    Hi Kalyan!
This is Ramesh from Vikakha Valley.. hope you remember. I have been a silent visitor to u’r blog for quite some time now, and must say that u’r work is very commendable! Grt job, man! I share this interest in photography, but have nevr ventured beyond amateur shoots. Have downloaded some of u’r landscape shots and have set ’em as my desktop wallpapers, too!
This thing with the King Cobra is a swell thing, man! I found an earlier post on u’r blog about u filming an all-digital docu for BBC – when will it be aired (or has it already been)?
BTW, a friend of mine is is keen on nature tourism. He’s an officer in the Indian Navy posted in Cochin, and quite a man of nature. I suggested him 2 look at your post on openings for naturalists. He might reach out to you. I’m waiting for an update on u’r Cobra project. Gud Luck!
