    Cheer up!

Cheer up buddy, it is just a cell phone. Did you check it under your car seat, that is where I find it all the time. 🙂 — Kalyanv

This time when you get a new phone, back the contents on to your PC. PC Suite for Nokia does it, and I am sure all other phones have similar s/w.

That is super luck indeed, usually it is stolen. Leave it unattended for a second and its gone. You call it from another phone and no one answers it or it is already switched off.

Ah! That reminds me of two thieves (ladies as per the news) who stole a whole bunch of phones. BUT forgot to turn them off, and within minutes in front of a whole lot of people the phones in their bags start ringing. Hah! Hah!

I would like to assume that most people would like to return it out of pity for the owner. I know many people who got their phones/wallets back this way. My phone has not been reachable since last night.. so I presume mine is gone for sure 🙂

At least you can get your old number back, if not the phone. That is a saving grace these days. So you are back in Bangalore I presume after that nice outing.

  12. brainz · March 28, 2007 Reply

Get back the old number, will you? Let me know, once you get a phone, will SMS my number.

That reminds me, I need to run a backup update of my contacts, its been ages since I have done that.

    Re: Cheer up!

You should be able to get the contact nos which were stored in the SIM from Airtel.

  14. anushsh · March 28, 2007 Reply

Possible the battery must have died out. Hope you find it .

I hope you have called airtel and informed them about your phone being stolen – they will disable it. If you have the IMEI number, they can block that as well (and they share such numbers with other providers, even though they dont publicise this).

Remember – you will be liable for all calls made on that phone until you report the loss of the phone.

I agree, the issue isn’t really the loss of the phone per se, but

    1. The loss of the contacts stored on the phone
    2. The fact that someone now has access to all those contacts

In the future, remember that services such as http://zyb.com are specifically designed to prevent loss off data when the phone is lost. More generically, that is the purpose of the SyncML initiative.

Also, since you use Linux, it is a trivial matter to have it detect and backup your phone every time you plug it into the machine’s USB port to charge.

Finally – rejoice! You now have an excuse to get yourself a nice new phone! 🙂

Send a message to your phone, and switch on delivery reports. When someone by chance switches it on you’ll know, and then call the number until someone picks. And if someone has found it you can assure him some money and he might return it. It has worked with me once.

That sucks man… 🙁 But hope you get to keep the old number without much trouble…

I know how it feels, mine’s been stolen once in the bus and the guys got down from the running bus. Nothing much you can do.
Atleast its not so in your case, so you can still expect it back.

ask your service provider what was the last number dialed from your cell.
i once left my phone in a busy airport and managed to find the person who had my phone (he had called his residence with my phone. that was the last call made on my cell before it was switched off).

  23. arunpillai · March 28, 2007 Reply

If its stolen, they’ll replace the SIM for sure, with the fear of being tracked.Amogh, should say u were very lucky then.

  24. redobsession · March 28, 2007 Reply

lost her Nokia 5500 about a month ago. We had given a complaint at the Cubbon Park police station and they said they will track it. Apparently the phone hasn’t been switched on since then.

Until now, I haven’t heard from anyone if cops were able to trace a lost/stolen cell phone. Anyway, if we get do the phone back, we will know for sure.

  32. ashwinne · March 30, 2007 Reply

I know the mobile providers can track the cellphone’s IMEI number. But, I’ve yet to hear about any case where they tracked a lost cellphone using this. I can understand given the proliferation of cellphones and their disposable quality.

The only time the providers track the IMEI in all seriousness is when the police want a criminal or terrorist number tracked.

  33. irq2 · March 30, 2007 Reply

The sub-inspector claimed they had done it before – even for stolen phones, so we are hopeful.
