Eravikulam Streams

The Shola forests are like sponges. They store all the water during the monsoon and slowly squeeze it out rest of the year. This is the reason why the sholas have such thick density of plant life and are always humid and moist. Eravikulam National park has lot of streams originating from many of these sholas. The photos below is the stream closest to the hut.

This is the same stream from above which eventually flows by the hut. This was shot with the camera on the door on the hut. So every morning, one would wake up to see this view. The other landscape photos of Anai Mudi was shot from that hill which you see in the backdrop. Infact this stream falls into the valley few hundred meters from here and that is the waterfall that you see in this photo.

Another stream at another location, not far away from the base camp again. I really wanted to take atleast one swim in these waters, but the water was always too cold to even step into them.

This is my first decent attempt at landscape photography and like a landscape photographer, I spent 10 min on every photo.. i.e setup the camera on the tripod, shoot in manual mode with manual exposure, use a remote cable and most imp of all, use filters. I never bothered with filters coz I always thought I could fix it in Postprocessing. But there is no bigger satisfaction that getting the photo right while shooting itself and also filters really create the mood in your photographs which you cannot achieve in post-processing. I’ve used 2-stop Gradual ND filter and Warming filter for most of these photos and I’m planning to invest in lot more filters in the coming weeks for sure.

Once I put up these images in my gallery, I’ll be geocoding them with a link to Google earth/maps. For now here‘s the view of Eravikulam from google maps. The light brown is the endless stretches of grasslands.

Lovely photos. Parts of the landscape looks very dry. During summer is there a danger of accidental forest fires?

  5. admin · March 16, 2007 Reply

One big chunk of this grassland got burnt when I was there. Will post photos of that forest fire later.

Superb place mate… feels so serene
do you think a Circular Polarising filter would have made more diff than a 2stop ND – esp in for the last image …

Eye opener! Green rolling meadows + sholas is how I perceive this place to be. I wonder who would control these fires in this isolated locale if they became huge. Rangers?

Beautiful photos. Don’t know why but it feels like a land far far away..

    Good to see your work.

Your filters are doing a great job.

Since you are tripod enabled, keep the aperture as small as possible, as that will give you more depth of focus.

The other thing is about composition of landscape shots. The old rule of having a “balance” is necessary for landscapes. Keep a foreground and a mid ground and set that against a larger background like the sky and the balance becomes perfect.

Am sure you have a real good wide angle lens in your armoury. Use that thingy.

    hth, this 2 cents.

Become a wildlife biologist instead of joining Infy 😀

  18. admin · March 17, 2007 Reply

I learnt that in this trip. Also I want to try some remote camera triggers to see if I can even shoot some wildlife in wide-angle.

  19. admin · March 17, 2007 Reply

There are forest watchers, guards and fire watchers. Infact some of them spent time with m e and helped me a lot in showing the place around.

    Shooting format

Great photos as always Kalyan. I’m assuming you shoot mostly in RAW? I’m glad you broke out the tripod for your landscape shots, I did some in Hawaii and the level of sharpness can’t rival that of handholding the camera.

Also, can tourists get deep into this park as you and Sandesh did? I assume you need some good guides and all.

Of course, being a wildlife biologist doesn’t pay very well – you need to have a background of some very hard and well-paying work to be able to afford to do the things that Kally is doing now 😛

our unsung heroes. are they mostly the local folk? i would think they are a reservoir of information and the govt ought to utilize them.
thanks for patiently answering my questions and hope u win the “travel blog of the year”. toodles!
