some street names are wrong though.

I had no idea my road was called Balasahed Sawant Rd. We’ve always known is as Juhu-Versova Link Rd.

PS: In other news, the Flex-based Yahoo Maps is now out of beta.

    and I still can’t use it πŸ™
IAC, I write my own maps mashups using javascript.

AFAIK, Yahoo Maps does have a JavaScript API. It’s just the default front-end that’s in Flash; you can write your own front-end (or mashup, whatever) in JavaScript.

  6. bluesmoon · December 21, 2006 Reply

    isn’t that what I said?

  7. mannu · December 21, 2006 Reply

Okay, for some reason I thought you were referring to Google Maps when you said, “I write my own maps mashups using javascript.”

By the way, Yahoo could have implemented another official front-end in JavaScript, for users that don’t have Flash Player 7 installed. But I guess it wasn’t worth the trouble.

  8. bluesmoon · December 21, 2006 Reply

especially since the only people who wouldn’t have flash are those who’d roll their own anyway.

  9. mannu · December 21, 2006 Reply

    >especially since the only people who wouldn’t have flash …

Well, I don’t think so. For a most-visited website like yahoo.com, you guys have the money and the resources to implement multiple front-ends with graceful degradation (heck, you have your own JavaScript-based UI library!). Let’s save this discussion for chai; I’ve spammed Kalyan’s journal enough πŸ˜›

This is available for India too

Lots of mistakes but a good start.

Indore’s small airport with a single “short” strip is not an international airport. πŸ™‚

The google map is still not searchable , eg you cant search for Koramangala or MG Road . Most of the useful mashups will require that , or maybe use wikimapia.
The live.com map does not show the smaller roads like google maps.

Shivku also has some comments – http://shivku.blogspot.com/2006/12/google-does-india.html

Some NGOs are already working on mapping hospitals and other essential information. This updated map will make their work a lot easier πŸ™‚

Interesting. This used to be available as part of http://virtualindia.msresearch.in/ (down today?) but it looks like it has been rolled back into MS Live maps. Bangalore still isn’t covered in good resolution though.

VirtualIndia used to have detailed street maps of Bangalore, the only problem was there seemed to be small errors in scale (plotting gps data would often show you as outside the road).

Boss, Google Maps is the single most useful online tool I use in the United States. If it’s in India, it’s the best thing ever!

    Ditto. Laptop + T-Mobile wifi card ($19.99/week πŸ™‚ ) + Google Maps.

live.com does not even show the Ring Road !!. They have only marked a few areas like Vijaynagar, Rajajinagar, etc no details available. As far as i See Live has a Long way to go to be useful.

Looks like everyone’s doing “brute force” for India. Take map, mark stuff by hand

Re: Did you know this ?

nope, definitely not better. no satellite images, no landmarks, no train routes, no bus stops and most of the same spelling mistakes. could you define better please?
