Red Bull

Note to self : Do not drink Red Bull in any form an hour before you go to bed.

It’s close to 5am and still not a wink of sleep πŸ™

pardon my ignorance! but there is Red Bull in India?

  2. fatmuttony · September 29, 2006 Reply

Ammend that to: Do not drink Red Bull in any form.

It tastes like horse-piss and can give you a cardiac arrest. I’ve come across people having Vodka + Red Bull as their last drink so that they can get home alert enough to use public transport (not here in Bangalore) but still maintain their high because of the Vodka. Only here in Bangalore, people have it as their main drink; imagining 5 rounds of that nonsense. Your body has to end up confused!

    Hahhahaha…

I logged into your website around 4PM PST(4.30AM IST), and I saw smiley(Kalyan is online thing) and I thought what the hell is wrong with this guy.

Now I know the reason πŸ™‚

I read some where that people mix redbull and alcohol, did you do that by any chance(I know that odd’s of you doing that is less than .001%)?

Yes since last year I think.

    India 2.0

    Hi,

    Nice blog!

Why don’t you consider writing about some of the new β€œIndia 2.0” sites that are creating a little buzz as well?

    Eg: http://www.ilaaka.com

    http://www.onyomo.com

    Thanks!

But, but, but… it’s perfect for night outs when you can’t afford to sleep before finishing the job, no matter what. Nothing I’ve tried works as well.

    *Nod*

That’s a really bad state to be in.

  10. mannu · September 29, 2006 Reply

    Thanks for the tip.

Note to self: Forget coffee, try Red Bull.

  11. achitnis · September 29, 2006 Reply

Heh. When your body needs to sleep, and your brain passes on that message, then no amount of forcing your body to stay awake is going to improve the state of things.

  12. achitnis · September 29, 2006 Reply

Try a 1 hour power nap instead – works much better. πŸ™‚

  13. themadman · September 29, 2006 Reply

It does taste like piss, I agree. The only way I’ve found to make it drinkable is to mix some flavoured syrup into it so it tastes like something else.

But Kalyan is right; that stuff late in the night will kill your sleep. I couldn’t sleep till 6 AM.

  14. fatmuttony · September 29, 2006 Reply

Yeah, but it’s got some 6 times the caffeine of a regular cup of coffee (which is equal to a regular pepsi/coca cola I think), and some wierd-ass chemical called taurine. It’s bound to give you a solid downer once the effects wear off. Watch for the downer the next time you try this. Maybe you’ve felt it but haven’t thought of this as a possible explanation?

  15. fatmuttony · September 29, 2006 Reply

Other than the pulling an all-nighter or need-the-energy-to-get-home explanation, why would anyone drink this nonsense? And waste good flavoured syrup on it while you’re at it?! Heavens no!

  16. themadman · September 29, 2006 Reply

I had worked a tiring Saturday night, slaving in the kitchen and had to make a 10-dish brunch at a friend’s house early the next day, so thought I’d get an extra energy boost.

It’s not cheap either. Even at wholesale rates, it costs me Rs. 67 per bottle. Compare to Coke at around 6.50 a bottle.

  17. deponti · September 29, 2006 Reply

Well…I do it cheap…I am an insomniac without any bull, red or otherwise! But I do know the dreadful feeling of not being able to sleep…

  18. jace · September 29, 2006 Reply

The can clearly says it has caffeine content equivalent to one cup of coffee only. According this table on Wikipedia, Red Bull has lesser caffeine than a shot of espresso. The weird taste comes from the caramel additive. It’s bad for your teeth, but guess what? Sweetened fresh lime soda is even worse.

I’ve never felt a downer. There’s no high either. There’s just this sense of being fully awake for several hours that fades out eventually. It takes a really large dose to get a headache.

Taurine is a naturally occurring chemical found in many mammals and of possibly therapeutic value in humans. The effects of its use for recreational consumption have not been well studied, but so far there’s little evidence to suggest it’s any more dangerous than other common drinks if consumed in limited quantities.

  19. fatmuttony · September 29, 2006 Reply

So, actually speaking, it would be more efficient to get 6 cups of coffee (or 6 colas) and get the same amount of caffeine in your body… Of course, you’ll also get 6 times the sugar and the other stuff they put in there…

  20. fatmuttony · September 29, 2006 Reply

So, how does it keep you up then?

  21. jace · September 29, 2006 Reply

Yes, up to 8 hours after consumption, but I only have one can, sometimes only half, and never on consecutive nights. This stuff is for unexpected late nights only.

  22. teemus · September 29, 2006 Reply

I’ve had five cans of Red Bull within the space of four hours, *many* times. I’m alive.

Moreover, I don’t drink or smoke, but am a caffeine addict.

Red Bull *does* give you wings, without the vodka as well! πŸ™‚ Contains the same amount of caffeine as a cup of coffee.

Btw, it’s not just Red Bull that will get you into a hangover-like state once it wears down. Too much of coffee/Pepsi/Coca-Cola/Mountain Dew does the same.

  23. teemus · September 29, 2006 Reply

    Forget coffee, try Red Bull.
Or Mountain Dew. Red Bull’s taurine gives you the extra kick, though.

  24. code_martial · September 29, 2006 Reply

Taurine accelerates your rate of metabolism and does other funky things while caffeine acts as a neurostimulant.

Red Bull launches a man in the middle attack. Brain-body communication regarding sleep goes into /dev/null

  26. code_martial · September 29, 2006 Reply

The Red Bull promo girls that came to our place said that one can helps you stay awake for 4 hrs, so that’s exactly how much you experienced.

  27. code_martial · September 29, 2006 Reply

Oops, bad math on my part.

  28. achitnis · September 29, 2006 Reply

Doesn’t change the fact that your body needs the sleep. :)

  29. kingsly · September 30, 2006 Reply

There was a similar product from coke a couple of years ago, I decided to try it out instead of coffee one evening and I was asleep in around 30mins.

Red Bull is a bit more effective… but coffee works better with me.

I know some people who can stay up all night after a single cup of coffee around dinner time.

  30. kingsly · September 30, 2006 Reply

Haven’t tried that. But, in general, I’m very wary of red bull.

  37. fatmuttony · October 2, 2006 Reply

LOL. Yes, of course, you’re allowed to choose your vice, but the very fact that you compare red bull to alcohol and tobacco says something right?

  38. fatmuttony · October 2, 2006 Reply

Don’t need any more funk in this body of mine. If it accelerates metabolism, I’m sure they’ll market it as a weight-loss drink pretty soon…

Best right now is Bangalore -> Mysore -> nanjangud -> Chamrajnar -> BR hills/kgudi. Where are you staying ?

Are there any, err, “safe” areas where a couple of people can pitch a tent and spend the night? Otherwise we are looking at JL, or any place that might have rooms available.

    Red Bull comedown

I once drank 8 cans of Red Bull in an evening (matching my buddies can-for-pint). It was TERRIBLE. I could not sleep AT ALL, and the next day I had a worse hangover than if I had been drinking (presumably due to the high sugar content). Felt sick, restless, and generally on edge. Hasn’t put me off, though. I usually start the day with can of Red Bull, and may drink 2 or 3 over an evening if I’m out. But never 8 in an single evening again!

fatmuttoney get your facts right. There is 80mg of caffeine in a can which is the same as in a mild cup of filter coffe. Taurine is an amino acid that is found in many food products and is in your body right now,

A couple extra listens to let the nasal tone wear off on you and you’re all set. Plus, there’s a totally great backing band – I don’t know a single name out there (although some of those musicians apparently stayed with Bob to do his next record; the bass player Tony Garnier even went on to make Love And Theft with him), but unknown as they are, they do their best to earn the reputation of the famous.
