Working for a company is like a high school romance

I was talking to krishi last night and then it hit me. Sometimes working for a company is like making a high school relationship work.

When you get into a relationship, you buy your partner lot of gifts, take him/her out on every occasion you get and you think about him/her everyday. Joining a company is like that too. You tell all your friends how nice it is and how well they treat you, you give 110% for the company and the company treats you like a king.

After a while in the relationship, things could go in two ways. Either you make the relationship work and settle down with the other person for rest of your life or you realize the person is not the one or you could have a fight with him/her and break up. Working for a company could have the same results. You could last all your life there, with all the ups and downs or you get bored of it, or the company does not treat you like it used to, or you just cannot stand someone there and call it a day.

On the other hand, Consulting is like a one night stand. You work for few days only, take a lot of cash and you will never need to work with or see the guy again. Ofcourse, if things are good and you have had a nice time, you could come back to the client. No long term commitments.

So what your choice : Long term relationship or one night stands ? I, for one prefer the one night stands 🙂

One night stand, definitely. [Who wants those stupid appraisals? ;)]

That’s the reason I have quit my full time job and doing ‘contracting’ now. I don’t think I will call myself consultant because people don’t really consult me but expect me to be a ‘filler’ with enough know how in programming, who can help in their death march project. Hopefully, after gaining enough experience, I will actually become consultant, where company will come to me and ask me for my advice! 🙂

Looks like your last long term relationship had a rather unplesant ending. Hope you are not like those women who have one bad relationship and think all men are bad 😉

The catch here is that there is no ‘commitment’ from both the sides in one night stands .. so, when you want a high school thingie in a one night stand, it might not just happen 🙂

Some unfortunate souls are just forced in to a long term relationship. Wings clipped , can’t soar but fortunately can fly! I miss my days of sheer freedom. But I guess you lose something when you gain something.

A better corollary would be Monogamy (more like arranged marriage) Vs Polygamy – no prizes for guessing what I would opt for 😀

    actually, it’s about the macaques…

…But I figured you wouldn’t be reading all those 47 comments in a hurry!

How lovely that they have accepted you like this….How I wish there were more naturalists like you in our jungle areas, and less like those predatory forest officers….

Our Himalayan trip was, unfortunately no other word would be quite as aspt, AWESOME. Uncle has taken some quite superb photos, but is yet to figure out how to post them without occupying huge chunks of bytespace….

We saw a few birds, but not too many. Am trying to identify the ones we did see…we have Salim Ali’s book as our reference.

Sikkim is really beautiful..go if ever the opportunity arises. We went beyond the snow line, had a lovely time watching the snow fall, and had a great snowball fight with some army guys, who said we were very fit to be so mobile at that altitude!

Being a consultant, I would prefer to view my clients as lifelong friends rather then one night stands and make sure they keep coming back!

Yes but the most demanding clients sometimes tend to be the most faithful ones.
