Wiki and Spam

How do people handle of spam on a public wiki ? The WildIndia Wiki has been getting a lot of spam the last few months. I have been cleaning them up regularly, but in the last one week, while I was out of town, there was a big flood of it and almost all the articles have been edited to include spam links. Check out the Recent Changes. I’d hate to make it moderated (is there a way to do it in mediawiki ?) and yet, want to keep the spam away. I know lot of you folks use Mediawiki…

Indiatimes and ICICI bank get together

If you’ve been on any of my security talks, you would have seen me poke holes in Indiatimes.com and with ICICI bank online banking site (both having shitloads of security features, all of which can be bypassed) . Now they have gotten together to launch a “Indiatimes ICICI Bank credit card” for secure online transactions. Oh Joy

Birds of Thattekad, Kerala

Finally uploaded my Thattekad photographs over the weekend. Not too many photographs, but the Frogmouth was the highlight of the whole trip. Anyway thats about all the photographs I have for now. Don’t know when my next wildlife trip will happen, considering I have so much work piled up. Friends – Ashy Wood Swallows Thattekad, Kerala, 4 Mar 2006 While waiting for the guide to turn up, we were at a bridge and noticed an Ashy wood swallow on a wire. Another one came to join the first bird and after a while a third one joined them. All three…

Tigers at BR hills

I got a call this evening from the folks at BR hills (The place where I worked as a naturalist for big part of last year). In the evening safari, four young tigers were spotted together playing in the rain. They could not spot the mother it seems, but these four tigers were about 2 feet in height and were surely more then a year old. A tiger’s litter is usually 2 – 4 cubs and half of them die before they complete the 1st year. It’s very rare 4 cubs can survive together till they are more then a…

Bharatpur Photographs

The Bharatpur photographs are finally up. This is one of my best catch of the lot. Snake Bird – Threat display Bharatpur, Rajasthan, 4 Mar 2006 This Darter (Snake bird) let me go real close for me to get a good portrait shot. At one point, I was too close and I had stepped into the birds comfort zone. The bird turned towards me and performed this display to scare me away. Of course I did get scared, as this was a big bird and it could jump on me and injure me quite badly. Check out rest of the…

Life Update

After living off my suitcase for the last 2 weeks, I’m finally back in Bangalore. Travels have been for work, pleasure and sometimes both. Got to visit Bharatpur (The best bird sanctuary in north India) and Thattekad (The best bird sanctuary in the south) in these travels. I’m sitting on 10GB worth of photographs and in these two forests, I got to see 30+ bird species for the first time ever in my life. Anyway I think I’m done with travel for a bit and will process these pics over the next few days. There have been lot of ups…

Hornbills and Rainforests

Got back last week from a shot trip to Dandali, Anshi and Ganeshgudi in north Karnataka region. I’ve uploaded bunch of pics as usual in the recent section of my website. The hornbills and lot of small rare birds were the highlight of the trip. Hornbill Habitat Ganeshgudi, Katnataka, 15 Feb 2006 Hornbills are the lifeblood of the rainforests. These birds largely feed of fruits and play a dynamic role in seed dispersal of numerous trees and are critically important to the regeneration and survival of the rainforest ecosystems. These are the major seed dispersers, which carry the seeds many…

Donating old hardware

Does anyone know any good NGO/School which could use old tech hardware ? I have printer, cd-drives, LOT of cables, networking gear, PC (PII 266Mhz, 14″ monitor) and bunch of misc other stuff. I’m just curious, what have all of you done with your 4 to 8 year old computer equipment? (The working ones ofcourse)

Bunch of new pics from my old collection

The World in Our Hands I just love this picture. The pattern on the tyre makes a lovely backdrop and this insect stretched its leg, just in the right way to make it look very attractive. This picture of course tells a story too. The story conveys our relationship with the environment, and how delicate the nature and wildlife around us is and how easily we can destroy it all. I’ve uploaded bunch of new pictures from my old Kanha and Bannerghatta collection.
