Conservation via photography
Baba Dioum, a naturalist from africa once said:
In the end we will conserve only what we love.
We love only what we understand.
We will understand only what we are taught.
This I think is the key to conservation anywhere in the world and this is what all the wildlife photographers and film makers should work for.
(Sandesh, thanks for the quote)
I hope Baba Dioum believed the notion that we can learn quite a bit from ourselves…
In quest of conservation
What Baba Dioum says ,is as you pointed out ,the core essence of conservation . People in developing countries plunder, pollute and overcrowd a habitat because of their impoverishment . Even though they may love nature, they are forced to exploit it, else chronic malnourishment will devour them.Photography needs to teach them, why conserving is actually going to benefit them!
True global sustainability, will be achieved when “affluence and democracy replace poverty and tyranny as the dominant human condition.”

And we were never taught to conserve!!….
i am so glad you are doing what you are kalyan… not everyone discovers what they enjoy, and not everyone does what they dream of….
You are admirable…
Glad that you pass the message along…
I saw Baba Dioum’s quote, when I was probably fourteen years old – it has stuck with me ever since. It’s so apt and so simply said that every time I think of it, I realise the reason behind what I do and what it is that I am trying to achieve. I hope it continues to influence people in the way that it has influenced me.
Warm regards,
Sandesh
PS: Sorry about the website – still under construction…. The poor ant has been frozen in that position for months. Will change it soon…. cheers!
