Colors of Shiok

Recently Madhu invited me to do a photo shoot at his restaurant, and take pics of his delicious dishes. Shooting food is really hard, or maybe it was because I was shooting in the kitchen and the customers were waiting. After spending couple of hours in the kitchen I managed to get few decent shots and got to know a lot about running a restaurant. Madhu does a good job of balancing costs vs quality of the excellent food that he serves.( Next time you are’re shiok, ask him about it, he loves to sit and explain it out :))

As you can see his stuff is mouth watering. You must check out Shiokfood.com and his recipe blog.

Woah, namesake or no namesake, I’m eating oodles at Shiok, come December.

And dude Kallu, for the love of {!starving && missing_flavour && trapped_in_yanqui_land && indian), post links to larger versions. Think about it: Orange lemon chicken as background on a screen. Yum.

Kallu shot a LOT more photos, and I want him to unveil 4 new photos every day for this week, so you can continue to be amazed at his photography skills. (And perhaps my cookery skills.)

Here’s a MUCH bigger version of the prawns in chilli sauce. Use it as your wallpaper.

Finally a non-pro who knows how to shoot food (i.e. contrast in colors and maintaining the textures).

Example of a really good food blog with bad photography: http://www.amateurgourmet.com/the_amateur_gourmet/2004/08/accidental_carb.html

That pizza doesn’t look nearly as good as it can.

What do you say about posting tips on how to photograph food without it looking unappetizing?

mouthwatering…. and I am so far away from Bangalore! *sigh* … anyway, just 2 more weeks.

The one important thing I forgot to mention is that all of these pics were shot with real food, not with some artificial stuff that just looks like food (the way most food photography is typically done).

As Kalyan says, the pics were shot in the kitchen. We would make the dishes for guests, Kalyan would snap them quickly, and then we’d send the food out to be served. So WYSIWYG.

I have a nikon D70. I wish I had a macro lens.. I shot them using my 70-300 mm lens. I was standing about 5 feet away from the plate.

Time to get a macro lens, Kallu. 🙂

Lets see.. I’m not an expert by I can tell you what I’ve learnt in the past 2 weeks.

    – Never shoot from the same angle as the light.. which rules out the flash on your camera. One of the reasons the pics from your link look dull is coz of that. I managed to get good results when I was shooting stuff at 30 – 90 degrees from the source of light. I used a softbox, but you can shoot in the evenings with window open on one side..

    – shoot close.. and have small depth of focus ( basically only part of the image is in focus and the background etc is blurred )

    – Never shoot straight on.. shoot at the same plans as the food or slightly highter.. I started with shooting pics from where I was standing.. but they looked too dead.

    Will post more later 🙂

    mouth watering stuff

Hi Kalyan, really great pictures especially considering the challenges of food photography. I had passed on the second one to a few minutes before lunch and you should have heard the groans emanating from them 🙂 Btw, Madhu informs that you are a member of Shutterbugs. Have attended about two meetings. Have I bumped into you by any chance? 🙂 I guess we’ll meet sometime, since you seem to be an active member!
