Fuckin Spammers

I got the following spam this morning

From: "ship-confirm@amazon.com" <ship-confirm@amazon.com>
Subject: Your order with amazon.com has shipped (#363-594188)

... yada yada ... Enlarge your penis ... yada yada ...

I had to open the above mail (In html based Yahoo! mail) coz I do order stuff from amazon once in a while and this damn mail had hidden 1×1 gif’s which submitted my emailid to multiple web servers .

Since I’m on it, here’s another spam I received last week.

From:	Brad Fitzpatrick <ggufseeuy@cnnic.net.cn>
To:	kalyan@lj.com ( lj = livejournal)

    heh

I did not realise till today that there was an option in Y! mail to turn off img tags from mails. Everyone learns stuff the hard way 🙂

And all these years we thought you worked at Yahoo…so where do you work, then?

Just because I work in a company , I need to know everything about it and its products. But if something is broken, I can get it fixed easily 😉

Ya, I work at Oracle and I don’t know anything about database, except that it’s an 8-letter word. Umm… actually, I know just a little more than that.

    Bah, sucks

Dude, someone is getting pretty smart with email databases – did you read about email from Jzavodn to me?

    yep

Looks like spam is getting very groups targetted. Maybe they are running some classifiers to link a set of users

yahoo employees don’t get free POP service ? apparently the regular users at .co.uk still do!

I get spam these days that has Udhay Shankar on the CC.

actually a lot of this spam (especially the RANDOM_WORD, gibberish text stuff) is being sent out by trojaned windows hosts.

So you do know that trojans have a habit of strip-mining names and addresses from outlook address books, and from the browser cache(s) on an infected system.

So if somebody’s been reading silk, or lih, or livejournal, or something, and then gets infected, you start getting spammed with the names of people you know in the From.

As somebody else has pointed out, you can pop your y! mail to someplace safer than a web client and read it. Me, I just work at a webmail company … i’d be shot, hanged, drawn and quartered before I used their, or anybody else’s webmail interface to read my mail.

    helping spammers ?

Are you sure you wanna put the mailID of your friend in my blog for spam crawlers to pick up ?

    Re: helping spammers ?

Whoops! I thought that ID was fake, but then I looked up the employee database and there’s actually someone by that name! Next step is for spammers to cc my manager’s email address on the spam (there’s no way I’ll delete the mail without reading, at least until I get used to that type of spam).

Interesting to know that.. I didnt think the trojaned machines make such a big impact. So in that case would it be possible to track the mail back to a friend ? ( considering that they use the hacked win box as the smtp relay itself )

Assuming you have some way of tying that IP to your friend. Static IP? Easy. But what if he’s got a dynamic IP? You’d have to go hunt for RADIUS / TACACS logs from his ISP’s dialin server – assuming his ISP let you have them.

I have completely lost the voting mark on my finger. I can go to North Karnataka and vote again. In this country, there are way too many open ends in the election system that the lack of paper trail is not the most glaring issue.

    What a beautiful creature!

It doesn’t seem to have an external ring-like structure behind its eyes for hearing..

    > I suddenly feel this void

That’s why people cry at weddings. New beginnings leave new voids.

I have no siblings. That is a void that is harder to describe and harder to even understand fully.
