Blug Meet

Simply one word to describe it – *Amazing*

The is one of the best Linux users meet ( Blug) ever. As I was telling achitnis, it was like packing 1 day of Linux-Bangalore into 2 hours. As most of you know, this meets topic was OpenSource Databases. I learned more about databases in this 2 hours then what I have learned in the last one year.

Started with botsie talking about Open source and how one should contribute back to the community which was followed with his introduction to RDBMS’s in Linux. Hareesh ( a friend of manusb) then talking about MySQL. Though I was expecting a talk about mysql ( as in good things about it ), it was about his project and how mysql did not suit his requirements, and how his tips to go around it. It was followed by a talk by Devdas on PostgreSQL. I must admit, I never knew anything about PostgreSQL, and his talk was wonderful. Atleast now I know when to use it, if I ever need it that is. Following that, jace gave a talk on ZODB and Python. Again an excellent talk, and I think I’ll actually give it a shot. Then Shiv Senthilvel gave an outstanding talk on ‘things that one should consider before choosing a particular DB’. Then karthik talked about ODBC in linux which was followed with the usual Atul’s rants and the announcement that kingsly post as the Blug coordinator will be taken over by Karthik.

Ofcourse who can forget the excellent food at the end 🙂

    Yeah, this meet was another hit. Amazing how well the meet-theme business is working out. More than 70 people in the crowd this time – many of them hardcore DBadmins. And all the talks went really well – interest never flagged despite the delays. Shiv’s talk really gave much needed perspective.

    The interaction between speakers and audience was also pretty lively this time. Good we had Biju around to keep things under control – except that no one controlled him, of course 😉

    And I swear that Asharaya makes the best Channa Bhatura in town!

    And I didn’t rant! Biju ranted! I simply explained the background behind the meet topic!

    OK! lets begin your online line tutorials – the first SQL statement which will give you a headstart

    SELECT * FROM partners WHERE partner <> “Kalyan”;

  4. noelladsa · May 23, 2003 Reply

    I hope domain of partners is not the whole world

    Good question – I always suspected you were intelligent. Lesson number 2 the LIMIT clause

    So assuming that you only want one partner to be SELECTed you modify your SQL to

    SELECT * FROM partners WHERE partner <> “Kalyan” LIMIT 0,1 ;

    In some databases like MySQL this will give you the latest entrant to the partners table. Increase the offset (0) to decend deeper into the table

    hehe..where the heck is Kallu..he should see how we r select partners for me..

    Hector Garcia-Molina would have fainted, had he seen this, I suspect.

    Oh yeah, what with google around, maybe someday, googling for “SQL + HGM” will put this as Result # 1 ;/
