Back to the forests and talk in mysore

After spending more then 2 weeks in the urban wildlife, heading back to the forests to spend a while there. I miss my monkey’s, the animals and the fresh air. Also elephant census is happening there today and tomorrow and I hope to work with the forest department on that.

I got myself the Nokia 6600 yesterday. So far I’m quite happy with the phone and the interface is not as slow as I thought it would be. I’ve also gotten used to the weird shape and the new menu system. I’m yet to configure the phone for GPRS, but hopefully I should have it up and running by today.

This sunday, I’m driving to Mysore to give a talk at Ankura 2005. I’m talking about bad security features, how they bite back, DRM hacks, how people should spend more time on design and less on crypto, application/web security and if I have time a live demo ;). If you are in or around mysore, do drop in. Luckly mysore is less then 2 hours away from BR hills. So I I can drive to mysore and drive back by evening.

Do you have any news on Operation Kaganoor

Kalyan (and other wild life followers in Karnataka),

Have you been following elephant capture operation “Operation Kaganoor” near Hassan? They captured this huge bull few weeks back and it was moved to Shimoga or something. While there was big media attention on the capture, absolutely no news on what happenned to the elephant after it was relocated.

And now Operation-II has started to capture another elephant.

The photos of first operation were horrible with blood oozing out of captured elephant and other elephants pushing and hitting that wild elephant. Just hope it is ok.

Tiger census to start on Monday

Hyderabad, May 7: The week-long preliminary Tiger Census in 22 sanctuaries and the four national parks in the State will begin on Monday against the backdrop of Police-Naxalite standoff in Nallamalla Forest and the disappearance of big cats in Rajasthan.

β€œThe figures that will come out from Nallamalla should not be trusted. The field officers are afraid of going deep into that forest. In fact, they had written to the officials expressing fears that they could become a victim of crossfire between the police and the Naxals or could be killed by either party on the basis of mistaken identity. But the Forest Department wrote back firmly that they had to carry out their work under all and any circumstances,” an informed source told this correspondent.

allamalla Forest spread over 4,000 square km is one of the important bases of Naxalites. It is also home to about 100 of the 146 tigers found in the State.
Only about 30 persons have responded to a call by the Forest Department to participate voluntarily in the census. There could be some more who might have gone to the sanctuaries directly. Six days of training for the census staff and the volunteers came to end on Saturday.

The preliminary survey would be over on May 14. The final survey will be carried out on two days β€” May 16 and 17. The census report would be out by June first week. The annual tiger census is carried out during the peak summer season with the hope that all the big cats would come to the water bodies. Their pugmarks are taken into account for final enumeration. There would be another Tiger census in November next covering all the national parks, sanctuaries and the reserve forests in the State. This would be part of the national census which is conducted every four years
