The real poachers

Today we had a bunch of retired forest officials coming over at the resort. While we were on the safari, we happened to see a Barking deer and I was telling them how this animal was quite rare to find in other forests etc. And then one of the person in the jeep tells the other one “This barking deer is one of the tastiest meat I’ve ever tasted. Come over to my place sometime and I shall arrange for the meat”.

These are the forest officials who are suppose to protect these forests and animals and keep the poachers away. Now you know why the animals are still dying.

Damn! And of course, they will “arrange” for such non-traditional meat for the babus who go visiting.

Now you know why the animals are still dying.
Now we know why it’s not seen in some areas! 😉

[Ok. Technically, the habitat is different, but still…!]

I am pretty shocked by what you’ve said actually. And that too just after I saw the story on the Sariska tigers on TV. 🙁

    Words fail me

Perhaps people like these think the animals are in protected areas just so they get exclusive poaching rights? It is obvious that they don’t believe in what they do. Will reporting them to higher authorities help? Or is it possible they are in it too? Someone must be turning a blind eye if this sort of thing happens often. It doesn’t matter what policies governments put in place to protect wildlife and their habitats if the system has this kind of rot inside.

We have come to learn that government officials don’t need to live by the rules laid out by the government, so this does not surprise me. They set out rules for the *other people*, see? And having done so, they can go about doing whatever they please.

Heard about project tiger …it is success in Ranthambore National park where the tiger population grew from mere 8-10 to 100 .

Ullas Karanth’s ventures in Kudremukh national park are so controversial …he has been accused of killing tigers for monetary benefits . What abt this project in your area ?

This guy is an ex Conservator of forest somewhere in karnataka. Now he has retired. I know the current PCCF is an excellent guy, but these kind of jerks still do exist.

Nopes, but its not just this one guy… its the midset of the damn people

  16. admin · February 17, 2005 Reply

Believe it or not, poaching of the indian elephant is on a decline and there have been very few incidents. Its the tiger that people are still after and ofcourse other smaller animals for the meat.

  17. admin · February 17, 2005 Reply

AFAIK he has not come here at all. Infact because of all the issues here, he spends most of his time outside karnataka now.

    Re: Shocking!!!!

yea.. u bet i’m shocked.. we are talkin abt the forest officials who are actually out there to “preserve” wild life – killing animals to satisfy their taste buds.. pay attention – not for money but because it *tastes* good.. killing them for money could be explained, maybe some kind of survival instinct.. but this is atrocious..

The current PCCF guy is not that Bengali chappie right? The one who said that since bamboo helps forest fires, we should chop all the bamboo trees.

Seriously, lots of PCCF don’t have much idea about wildlife, only about forestry operations like extracting timber, etc.

R M Ray, the current PCCF is very good and prob one of the best we have had so far. Lets hope he gets to stay at that position for a while and make a difference to the forests

    Did u read this?

    http://www.tehelka.com/story_main10.asp?filename=hub022605The_Cranes.asp

Says: “In Banglaore, post-graduate student, Uttara, organised two road counts with the help of her friends. They even gorged on egrets served in piping hot curries while doing the crane count.”

This friend of mine who is associated with the ICF says that the bit about the Bangaloreans is a gross error and the newspaper called up to apologise and will be printing an errata in the next issue. Tehelka is the kind of reportage that would imediately look for controversy, but the very fact that they cooked it up pointed to the existence of such practices. I’m not saying that the ICF could be involved in this (especially knowing some volunteers at ICF), but that it might be quite common in conservation circles, for all you know. Can we somehow lead Tehelka to these wildlife “protectors” – it could take the case against these guys forward, and also make a good story in the times of the missing tigers of Sariska.

that’s disgusting.. downright disgusting. i know i’d want to be a forest official, simply because i love the creatures and their habitat so much.. here’s somebody with that responsibility, and see what they’re doing. i guess before running anyone thru a series of qualification tests to become a forest official, they need to answer one critical question:

“why do you want to be a forest official?”

that defines pretty much how the forest will be under that person’s care.

btw, bumped into ur blog thru bloglines recommendations, but cant access certain entries that i see there.. is there a problem?
