Nostalgia from Doordarshan days

This is probably the first cartoon that I’ve ever seen in my life. It used to come very often on DD in the late 80’s. Infact when I was watching this today, I realized I still remember every line and every scene of this song. It goes like “Suraj Ek, Chanda Ek…”, the cartoon in which a “didi” tells a small boy about Ekta? It’s a story to illustrate the importance of unity in diversity.

I sure enjoyed it then (do even more now) and hope you will have pleasant feelings of nostalgia too.

    Wonderful stuff – Thanks!

My husband and I saw the clip with a wide grin throughout.
Sure brought back some good memories. Today with a zillion channels I never ever get to see anything interesting… end up watching some dvds instead.
Will pass it around to some of my friends. Hope that ok.

    Oh beautiful !

    Kalyan…whoever you are…I love you man !
I was almost in tears while watching it after so many years.
I could recall sitting in front of the tv as a kid watching it with eager eyes.
How pleasant those days were….a far cry from the trash they show on tv these days.

    Wow

Wow…phenomenal! the mid 80s were really amazing..life was so simple…do well in school and you’re fine…just one channel to watch. I remember sitting down with family to watch The World this Week every Friday night, waiting for Spiderman at 5:00 every Sunday evening (sponsered by Rasna). Dad used to watch the Hindi news from 8:40 – 9:00. Remember how they had ‘updated’ news in the English Bulletin at 9:30? (wrt. the hindi news)…man I can rememer quite a few newsreaders..ved prakash,j v raman, salma sultan, manjari joshi in hindi, Usha Albequerque, Menu, Rini Simon, Tejpal Singh(?)

Man I’d do anything to relive those days.

do u remember these too ?

do u remember the one called “Gubbara” – asking not to spread rumors, one telling to be careful at railway crossings, one abt throwing garbage in the dustbins, one with birds, asking people to save for the future. and a funny one abt family planning with a couple standing in the rain with an umbrella and children popping under the umbrella until there was not enough space.
there is a chicago tribune ad that kinda reminds me of the last one…

    Re: more memories

Malgudi Days is the greatest Indian work to ever hit the Indian silver screen. Seems they’re making a sequel to it , continuing from where they left. They couldn’t make episodes on all the short stories of Narayan because the director, Shankar Nag, abruptly passed away. The first series, the one you see on DD, was made in 1987. The same producers, this time with a differnet director are continuing to shoot the sequel as we speak. It’ll be shot on 35mm and according to the producer, T S Narsimah, it will be quality direction and storytelling, unlike the crap put forth by Balaji. This is great news indeed.

    Re: more memories

I’ve tried it everywhere else myself, can’t seem to get it. The only option it seems is to tape it on Sunday afternoons when its shown on DD National.

Its a masterpeice I tell ya, I’m a BMM student and I want to ultimately become a filmaker. I want to study Malgudi Days to the fullest, its simply the best thing prodcuced on reel by any Indian since Satyajit Ray.

I don’t seem to understand why most Indian audiences don’t rave about Malgudi Days anyore. Either its becaue todays Indians can’t fathom good quality TV anymore, or its simply because Ekta Kapoor, Mahesh Bhatt and Karan Johar have degraded their IQ levels.

  27. toni123 · May 20, 2005

Of course, only a few handful Indians would understand it as “treasure”. To most, Ekta Kapoor’s crapfest programming and Mahesh Bhatt’s pimping of talentless skanks..is the real treasure.

    Re: more memories

I hope they air Malgudi Days again or even better, I hope one of the private channels buy the rights and air it again. It will be amazing.

  29. toni123 · May 22, 2005

    Re: more memories

Actually Sony TV did air Malgudi Days once. They gave it a matinee slot instead of a prime time one, though. Most of the Sony regulars won’t even know that Sony TV once aired Malgudi Days. They’re too busy draining their brains on the Balaji crap and the “nanga-nach” & “item-number” music videos. Which is terrbly terribly sad. I’m 18, and even my own peers seem to enjoy these things.
