Nostalgia from Doordarshan days

This is probably the first cartoon that I’ve ever seen in my life. It used to come very often on DD in the late 80’s. Infact when I was watching this today, I realized I still remember every line and every scene of this song. It goes like “Suraj Ek, Chanda Ek…”, the cartoon in which a “didi” tells a small boy about Ekta? It’s a story to illustrate the importance of unity in diversity.

I sure enjoyed it then (do even more now) and hope you will have pleasant feelings of nostalgia too.

Wow. Where did you get this from? Reminds me of my going to the neighbour’s house at 11:00 on Sundays for watching this on a Black and White TV. and they would collect 25 paisa from us 🙂 It was definitely worth 25 paise 🙂 But not all the sunday would I get to watch this… 🙂

    I remember!

I remember that. Also that my bigger bros and I actually enacted it (as much as we could). Thanks for bringing back the memories. Seriously!

DD used to put out some amazing stuff about National Integration and things…loved all of them.

I remember the more recent “Mile sur mera thumara…” thingy which came out somewhere around 1995-97 for our 50th year of independance.

This is just awesome! Lotsa fond memories of lazy Sunday mornings filled with Mowgli and Ballu (cant remember chotu’s real name) flooding back. Thanks for this 🙂

On slightly (un?)related note, I have posted link to couple of very interesting videos on my blog. Check it here.

was grinning away for the entire 7 mins!!!:D

the music, the animation, the lyrics…gosh, how i enjoyed going thru this experience after all these years!! thanks a bunch kalyan!!

love the part when the lyrics go ‘daan chugne baythee chidiyan’ and the neck-movement of all the birds is perfectly synchronized.
and also when the little kid’s arms move with the rhythm as he picks mangoes to ‘hind desh ke nivaasi sabhi jan ek hain’ right at the end!:D

    aah…tremendously wonderful feeling!!:D

    childhood memories

Just love this piece. I have it on my system as a mp3.
It always brings back a flood of memories of DD and those idyllic childhood days when one channel could entertain a whole family for hours.
And i absolutely love the kid’s voice in this piece –
    “Bela Gulab Juhi Champa Chameli
Phool hai anek kintu mala sirk ek hai”

    😀 😀

  16. thaths · January 31, 2005

Phoey! Those ‘mile sur’ videos came out in the early late 80’s, early 90’s. Not for the 50th anniversary.

  17. fox2mike · January 31, 2005

Oh really?? Ok 😀 I watched them as late as 95+…. wasn’t here before that!

  18. thaths · January 31, 2005

Awesome! wget-ed it immediately. It brings back so many memories, some that I had valiantly tried to keep bottled up. 😉

This was one of my favorite cartoons. In addition to this, there was also the one about spreading rumours (‘sa-re-ga-ma-pa… re-sa-ma-ga…’, went the audio). And then were a weird cartoon from either the Soviet Union or some Eastern Block country about the Olympics.

DD and AIR are sitting on a treasure trove that they should release into the commons.

    Re: more memories

Kalyan, saw your journal after a long time today while trying to catch up on people whose photos I follow. The ek-anek stuff was really nostalgic and reminded me (like a lot others) of the good old DD days… serials like “Ek Kahani” and “Vyomkesh Bakshi” (guess I’m a little older than most of you)… and Saturday movies like “How Green Was My Valley” and “The Last Emperor” (my father walked out during the wedding night scene). Hate to voice a senile “those-were-the-days” sentiment, but can’t imagine the new generation growing up on the likes of “Kyonki Saas…”! I hope there’s better stuff for kids on TV. But come to think of it, that is pretty much what my father used to say when I used to go over to my friend’s place to watch “Johnny Sokko and his Flying Robot” :)). Guess that’s how culture evolves, things move into the past constantly… my father’s hairstyle modeled after Ashok Kumar (I suspect) irked my grandfather, Johnny Sokko made my father uncomfortable, and now I hate the saas-bahu soaps! Generation gaps always existed, just that now the pace of change has probably been phasing out generations much faster. I guess we’ll be more at peace with the world if we acknowledge that. That said, I still hate these #$%@*# soaps!

does anyone remember “The Stone Boy”… i used to love watching it..

  40. achitnis · February 1, 2005

    Re: stupid!

Yes, of course I saw them. And how I choose to pull Kallu’s leg is entirely my own business, ok? If you weren’t so self-absorbed, you would have recognised what I was doing and not shot your mouth off, giving the game away.

  41. birdonthewire · February 1, 2005

Great!! Actually, just mentioned that on my blog, thanks for the link!!

  42. birdonthewire · February 1, 2005

oh boy, that was actually quite awesome. I quite liked it!! Shukran again!!

Stone Boy? Can’t remember… help! Any info on the web? I’m hitting some other Stone Boy which sounds too serious to be a childhood darling.
