Back to School ?

Last couple of days have been really crazy.

Been considering all my options and still not really decided on anything. I was floating the idea of starting sometime on my own, but after meeting people/VC’s etc, I realised that’s not such a viable option right now. And let me tell you this : if you want to start off, its better to start off yourself, then via a VC. The VC’s will drink every drop of your blood.

Photography is moving slow and steady. I am hiring derherr as my manager. He has more contacts in the industry then anyone else around me and he has been getting me this steady line of contacts.

Couple of weeks ago, I gave a talk to the CSA class at IISC on Application Security. Last week the Crypto/netsec prof, Mr Gopinath called me over to his office and asked me if I wanted to do some security research with him at iisc for couple of months since I was on a break anyway. The offer sounds good, but it will mean, I’ll have to slog my butt off for couple of months.

So I have decided to take up the IISC offer for now.. Not sure how long that will go on. My estimate is about 4 – 6 months and its part time thingy anyway, which means I’ll still have time for my Photography/Consulting/Play. 🙂

    vcs etc angels etc

VC are like that, it usually takes months if not years of negotiations with VC before you get a good deal. What you are looking for really is an angel investor. Someone who will invest 2-3 crores (too small an amount for a VC).

Anyway dont give up, business is like that, you need to work at this for months before you find a good deal.

    network

use your time at IISC to network, IIT/IISC are good places to find funding and great ideas.

I have not the foggiest as to what you are talking about. ;-p

Do not take external finance VC or Angel if you are planning for long term, Start with whatever capital you have (or can garner from friends/family/banks) and keep growing.

    Two golden rules

#1 Keep a very strict control on the burn rate – you should be aware of the company’s micro-finance
    #2 NEVER DO DEFICIT FINANCING

You will find this very same advise on blogs of several successful ISVs (including Joel if I remember right)

On the other hand all you want to do is get some money for yourself then hire a marketing agency, go all of getting the largest sum that VC will give you and go bankrupt.

Do consult a lawyer on what kind of liabilities you will have – there are specialists precisely this

  26. derherr · November 2, 2004 Reply

not really … just that ashwin thinks its was a *major* achievement … and by the way … the line he used was …
“Please give me your e-mail address, I’ll mail you the pictures” !! unluckily there was no camera phone craze at that time so there was no ..”Please give me your phone number, I’ll send the pictures to your phone” … he so would have done it !!
