I’m Back
Except for the not-so-nice train journey, the trip was pretty good. I had to take a 4 hour stink of shit on the railway platform, sleepless night thanks to all the people snoring loud around me and the lack of people to talk to as everyone around me spoke only bengali. Decided to fly back and I’ve decided not to make any more long distance train journeys.
Met all the “good” relatives with whom you can actually have a decent time and not the ones who annoy you like shit. Ate all the yummy home made sweets and visited all the people whom I haven’t met in years.
Vizag has not changed a little since I last remember.. the traffic is still the same (I drove across the city at 6pm in less then 15 min), its still sweaty.. but after 3 days you get used to it and most of all the beach still rocks. Had very little time to go around to take pics, but I managed to catch some

Beautiful!
this one is my new wall paper.
Some places are best visited during monsoon!

that, my friend, is the quintessential indian train journey, which leads to the quintessential indian train experience (dangerous .. very dangerous … but what the heck!) – you open the door of the compartment, sit at the door and firmly grip the hand grips, and feel the wind. quite a few standard disclaimers will have to apply
glad to know u had a good time!
byuutiful picture!!
the indian coastline definitely deserves more appreciation than it receives!!
Unfortunately I went in the AC compartment and all the doors were closed. You think I did not try 😉
I still love short distance journeys… try the blr-mysore trip on train.. its lovely.. I don’t ever leave the door.
Almost all places are best viewed during monsoon.. thats why I did the kerala trip too.
If you really want to enjoy monsoon, you should haul your ass to Mahabaleshwar in Maharashtra, suppose to be second rainiest place in India after Cherrapunjee/ Mawsynram. Also birth place of Krishna river. Its just fabulous!.
I had a pleasure of visiting it in Aug ’98.
the konkan by the window is heaven
if you feel the karwar region is dangerous, do the bangalore – kerala konkan , breathtaking and not dangerous except for floods in which case the train does not run

I take this decision each time I’ve suffered one such journey, but then again I end up travelling by train to save cash. 🙂 This time I’m going to Mumbai by train (a 24-hour journey). At 381 bucks, it’s irresistible.
I’m firm on flying at least one way, and I usually prefer flying back. That way I can take the Monday morning flight and land straight in office. 😉
You should also try one of these Volvo buses sometime. They’re costlier than train, but they’re more comfortable (no shit stink and stuff) and especially good for ~12-hour journeys.
the last time i tried it, was on the way to some programming contest, in the middle of nowhere.
nice pics!!…btw, u’d been to the east coast – where are the sunrise shots??
I tried, but I could never get up. 5:30am is a bit too early

I tried doing exactly that.. but the flight got delayed by couple of hours and reached bangalore only at 6pm. 🙁
Awesome Pics
Awessssssssome
I’m thinking of Jammu by train. 4 days! To save money, I’m also thinking of going non-AC second class.
Somebody stop me!

Long distance train journeys are super fun if you travel in large groups.
