Shooting the heavens

There is a going to be a Full lunar eclipse on May 4th (tue night – wed morning) on this side of the world, and as you might have guessed, I am looking forward to shoot the different stages of the moon.

The moon with be a white dot with my current 18-70mm lens. I will need a pretty powerful lens. One kind soul at work has agreed to lend me his 70-300mm nikon lens. If any of you have a 300mm prime lens or a 300-xxxmm range nikon lens and if you are willing to lend it to me for a day, do let me know.

I will also need to pray for a clear weather that day. Lets hope everything goes well.

if you want to shoot the moon..i would recommend at least a 500mm lens..and also that you shoot from either a high rise( rare in bangalore ) or shoot somewhere outside the city..

at least that’s what my astronomy club friends in college used to do..go out of the city where the haze is less …

Not really.. I shot the moon with my old 280mm lens and it came out pretty well and I could clearly see few of the crators on the moon. 300mm will do, but the resolution will be hardly any.. but yes.. 500mm lens will kick ass.

Anyone with that lens here ? 😀

My house fits the description 😉 ( I was thinking about trying on the top of our office as well)

nah i would recommend trying it from say top of public utility building..now that would be a high rise.. 5 floors doesn’t count..my flat itself has more floors than our office..7!!

    Shooting tips

The moon is best shot near the horizon. It appears bigger at the horizon. I don’t know what time the eclipse is. It would be nice if it were around the time of moon rise/set.

Use a tripod. The moon moves across the skies surprisingly fast.

If you can silhouette a city skyline in the lower third of the frame, that would be cool.

Try a multiple exposure shot like so:

    Meter using a gray card.

Post your work in LJ. I am looking forward to it.

It was supposed to be a joke :D. I have a Kodak CX6200; there’s nothing I can do with it, or can I?

If you find a second lens, pass it this way. I only have a 28-80mm.

I have that second lens you’re searching for. Call me (9886211271)/mail me if you’re interested.

P.S. – Damn! Should have got it to Bhoomi Jathre. Would have been so much easier.

    Excellent! Where/when can we meet?

P.S. – Having that kind of a lens at Bhoomi Jathre would have been great. I had to struggle a fair bit for close-ups.

I head to Banashankari from Airport Road (and back) every single day of the week (other than Sunday, thank you very much) for my internship. Call me and we can set up the whole thing.

And I head to Airport road almost every alternate day. I’ll be staying home on Monday, but expect to be at Airport road on Tuesday.

Maybe sometime on Monday? I’ll be going to Brigade road to get my reels processed.

If you are not going to use it for the lunar eclipse, then let me know 😀

Lunar eclipse, it is. And maybe some birds too.

But I have an ISO 100 reel in the camera now. Another 20 or so clicks before I can remove it and put in an ISO 400 reel. That’s another thing I dislike about film.

On Monday, I’ll be passing Jayadeva Hospital around 1100. Let me know if we can meet up then.
