Tasty Bangalore treats

I visited themadman‘s new restaurant ‘Shiok’ on CMH road the other day. Really nice ambiance with excellent south-east asian food. For those of you who don’t know him, he is a geek turned chef. Read his inspirational story here.

Someday.. somewhere… I just might start one. The idea has been itching me for a while now.. It will either be a dessert-only place or a european restaurant. ( maybe the day is not too far away )

So many new restaurants in town and haven’t had time to visit any of them. Visited Shezan ( try the steak) and Bangalore Bistro last week and both the places managed to wet my tongue and tickle my taste buds. The chicken lasagna at Cafe Y which I had 2 weeks ago totally blew me away. Little italy and Biryani merchant are on my radar this week.

Looks like Bangalore is all set to become the restaurant capital of India πŸ˜‰

what about the hole in the pocket? πŸ˜‰

my bro, who is in hotel industry, says bangalore cannot YET become the restaurant capital of India, because of the high prices! In Bombay and Hyderabad and Delhi (to some extent too..) you get great food and ambience at cheaper prices it seems.

Where is Little Italy? Even I’ve been wanting to go there.

  3. admin · March 15, 2004 Reply

    I agree to an extent.

Few of them are priced really high and I prob visit them once a year. For example I went to Memories of china in Taj a few weeks ago and I’ve the best chinese food ever. But it was very expensive ( luckly a friend was treating me ) and I dont think I can go there again.

But there are other sexy places where you can have a heavy lunch / dinner for 100 – 150 bucks range , which I personally thing is very decent.

Its on the left of 100 feet road, when you are coming from CMH road towards airport road in indranagar

    That’s quite true… πŸ™‚

Need to make a list of those kind of places and put it up on Bangalore LJ for everyone to see and experience.. πŸ™‚

That sounds like a joke. Bangalore has a serious food problem. Ask anyone who has lived in a Real City (TM) like Mumbai or Delhi and they’ll tell you. I agree with that most places are way too expensive.

  7. themadman · March 15, 2004 Reply

You’ve gotta be kidding me. Bombay is much more expensive as far as restaurants go. I’ve lived and worked there. I know how much money I used to blow.

  8. dhempe · March 15, 2004 Reply

Well Bombay may not be the greatest example, but even then see ‘s comment further down the page.. u will know what I mean..

  9. zoombiee · March 15, 2004 Reply

Leave out Mumbai from that list . Restaurants( decent ) are super expensive here.

    My opinions

As a regular vister to mumbai ( my dad works there ), searching for hotels we were fed up πŸ˜‰ . Finally we had to settle in a 5star hotel which actually was a joke!. No decent, tasty dishes. Same with Kolkata also. Mumbai’s Pav Bhajis however satisfy me always. They are a class!. But in Banglore, hotels are aplenty. Drop into any hotel,No regrets vis a vis apetite, money anything.

I lived in Bombay two years. I remember how much of a problem getting decent food was. Bombay a β€œreal city”? Hah! A disease-breeding gutter the size of a city is more like it.

The only good steaks I’ve had other than the barbecues at the ‘s and my place are at Koshys and Casa Piccola and I’m yet to come across a place that serves then any way other than well done.

Any place where I specify rare / medium rare?

Heh. That’s the Malayalam actor Dileep in Meesha Madhavan

  29. themadman · March 15, 2004 Reply

It’s best to keep in mind that Indian “medium” and French “medium” are totally different things.

Also, to get the perfect steak, you need to let it “rest” for a couple of minutes so it’s got a uniform colour and texture throughout. Most steaks I’ve had in Bangalore have been crappy.

  30. shaurya · March 16, 2004 Reply

Lol, ok, so it’s more than just a cool pic. I’ve heard of him but not seen any of his films. I am familiar only with actors from about 1993 to 1995, around the time of Kireedam, Chengol etc.

    Hi.

What I meant is that the traditional medium steak is supposed to be cooked for 3 minutes on each side. This is my personal favourite. Rare steak is too bloody and well-done steak tastes like leather. In India, however, each restaurant has its own idea of “medium”, “medium-well” etc. Most of them only know how to cook it to dry well-done texture. So you really don’t know WHAT you’ll get if you order a medium steak.

Miller’s 46 is a decent place for steak. Not excellent, but pretty good. Tell Jude Koshy, the owner, that I asked you to visit.

Tips to enjoying your steak in India:

    1) DO NOT get it on a damn sizzler. It splatter shit all over your clothes and makes a mockery of cooking time. Anything you get on a sizzler is always extra well-done.

    2) Ask for a medium or medium-well steak and tell the waiter you want it cooked for exactly 3 minutes on each side.

    3) If the steak is flavoured, ask for the sauce on the side and not spread like mayonaisse all over your steak or else there goes the meat flavour. πŸ™

    4) When it arrives all hot, don’t cut it open immediately. Let it sit for about a minute. This gives it the “resting” period that the kitchen hasn’t given it. You’ll have a better steak after that.

    5) Don’t let it go cold.

  40. themadman · March 16, 2004 Reply

Yes, it’s good. See my response to shaurya elsewhere in this thread.

They do that all the time in Casa Piccola, never thought of asking them not to!

i am inclined to believe its only human, i see ppl craving for a steak in Bangalore, the same ppl would crave for idly or something in the prairies.

its like i crave for middle eastern food every now and then, but if i am in morocco, i would crave for mashed potatoes and pizza.

all this talk about steak, what about the meat source in India? is the beef from healthy cows or from cows that die a natural death?

All cows die a natural death except the one’s that don’t. The best test to check if a cow is healthy or not is to eat a well made steak. πŸ˜›

there goes your value for human life, i prefer the cows that were slaughtered rather than cows that died of mad cow disease. hey its just me, i understand different cultures have notions of delicacies. i wouldnt eat steak in india for all the money in the world.
