Apocalypse Now

Kurtz : “The horror. The horror…”

The words are still echoing in my ears..

A *must* see if you have not watched this movie “Apocalypse Now”. I watched it last when I was a kid and now again. The movie starts and ends with the song “the end” by Jim morrison. What more do need I need to say.

I heartily concur. It is one of the best (Vietnam) War movies ever made.

I would recommend watching the film a couple of times, reading Conrad’s Heart of Darkness and watching the film again. Apocalypse Now is loosely based on the Conrad book. I love how Kurtz has been neatly transplanted from the Belgian Congo to Cambodia and Laos.

Can you suggest any more books on colonialism in Africa, particularly Belgians in Congo and the French in Algeria?

The Scramble for Africa is a great book on colonialism in Africa.

King Leopold’s Ghost and In the Footsteps of Mr. Kurtz are excellent books on the DRC.

I don’t know much about Algeria. My interest at this stage is East Africa and the Congo.

Do it. Do it. Do it. Do it soon. To do justice to SEA, you must be willing to spend a few months there at least.

Also watch The Killing Fields. I am not ashamed to say tthat I cry every time I watch that film.
