Matrix and Geekdom

I finally caught the movie on the big screen yesterday ( after watching it twice on a crappy VCD) . Thanks to rashmiprasad, I managed to get tickets for the 1st day. The more I see the movie, the more I seem to like it. Though the 1st half of the movie, could have been better, the story line is just brilliant and it almost lives up to the first part. I just cant wait to see Revolutions.

One thing I really like about the movie is its relation to Geekdom and Religion. I know religion is a sensitive topic , so I wont talk about it ( The movie was banned in Egypt), but I will talk about the geekdom part of it.

If you are interested, you could get the complete transcript of the Movie here. I know many of you want to read it to understand it better 😉

The sshnuke scene is pretty amazing. Trinity uses something like rxvt and you can see the output of nmap at the top of the screen. This scene lasted for only 5 seconds though. However this is *the* first movie, where people have done some homework. Though people still holler saying “Why was it a IPv4 address and not a IPv6 address? 100 years from now everyone will be on v6”. Anyway I give them full credits.

But the movie has deeper connections to geekdom then just this specific scene. Atleast it connects to me to the things I do everyday. Here are few of the quotes:

###
Neo: These are backdoors, aren’t they? Programmer access. How do they work?

Well, ain’t this the case in real life too. Almost all the programs that we take off the net ( esp closed source windows programs ) have some kind of backdoor or spyware attached to it. worse are softwares that come with adware. And then there are people who hack into machine and leave backdoors, so that they can come back anytime.

Oracle: See those birds? At some point a program was written to govern them. A program was written to watch over the trees, and the wind, sunrise and sunset. There are programs running all over the place. The ones doing their job, doing what they were meant to do are invisible, you’d never even know they were here.

So true. Take the DNS servers, they are there doing their job and no one really cares about them. What’s important is that there are only 13 root DNS servers in this world, and if they go down, the Internet (www ?) will pretty much become useless. They are sitting there doing their job and are pretty much invisible for the end users.

Neo: Programs hacking programs.

I see them all the time. Buffer overflows, worms, Nimda/Code red virus ? They are pretty much agents sent by an infected programs/machines(“evil”) to go and infect ( in some cases hack ) other machines and programs. Login to irc.dal.net and you will see them everywhere. All the botnets just sitting there to wake up the zombie machines to ddos someone anytime.

Smith: I killed you, Mr. Anderson, I watched you die, with a certain satisfaction, I might add, and then something happened. Something that I knew was impossible, but it happened anyway. You destroyed me, Mr. Anderson. Afterward, I knew the rules, I understood what I was supposed to do, but I didn’t; I couldn’t; I was compelled to stay, compelled to disobey, and now, here I stand because of you, Mr. Anderson, because of you I am no longer an agent of this system, because of you I’ve changed, I’m unplugged, a new man, so to speak. Like you, apparently free.

Does anyone remember HAL9000 ? I know we still haven’t broken the turing test, but I’m sure we will in the next 10 years.

###

And best of all was Agent Smith. I bump into programs like them everyday. Remember Slammer worm ? I really see no diff in a worm like that and Agent smith. Replicating, infecting and causing havoc.

As for what I understood from the movie,

– Zion is another kind of Matrix ( Created for people who would not accept the Matrix (0.1% of the people ))
– Neo at the end of the movie, managed to break out of the Zion matrix too.

Too much to comment here, really. But I will stop with one point.

… However this is *the* first movie, where people have done some homework. Though people still holler saying “Why was it a IPv4 address and not a IPv6 address? 100 years from now everyone will be on v6”. Anyway I give them full credits.

I give the creators of the movie far more credit than those who come up with this inane objection. They’ve done more homework than you realise. Note that this was inside the matrix, and the matrix is supposed to be a simulation of 1999. Get the significance?

And thanks for the script. 😀

Yo… they use IPv4 because Trinity’s in 1999 when she accesses the computer inside the Matrix… what I didn’t understand was why they needed a total electricity shutdown in the first place.

I loved the end…. after Movie I, Neo was The One – and now, we realise he’s The One, twice over! I can’t wait for Revolutions!

That was to disable the alarms. They were designed to work through sabotage, but not through an total electricity shutdown.

Hey we were supposed to go, but who could resist a show on very first day, but post exams we could go again if u r willing and able…

Matrix was areated in Late 1999, but the year where neo breaks out of the matrix is about 100 years from that.It took many years to perfect matrix etc ( atleast that’s what I remember from the first part, where smith is talking to morpheious ).

Either way, I give them full credit too.

hhehe, its still on. I wanna see it again. Lets maybe go next weekend.

The 100 odd years should not make a difference. (I vaguely remember it being a lot more than that – am unsure of that though) The point is that the computer that trinity was trying to get through was part of the simulation, and hence subject to 1999 reality. It fits perfectly.

Hey ..talking about architect predicting love for neo and trinity..it definitely was in his plans….since the oracle told trinity she would fall in love with neo .
That means he still knew neo would take the left door..and that everything that occured after he took the left door was still predicted by the archi..:(.

  9. zoombiee · June 15, 2003 Reply

therez no predicting.Everything has been chosen to happen. The only thing that ppl r there to find out is that they shud know y they made the choice.I find this a complete contradiction to the 1st part where the theme relies on defying destiny.

Technicalities and theories aside, I thought Matrix Reloaded was kick ass stuff and I am glad I attended the screening, even though it meant waking up at 8 in the morning 😀

Although I thought Zion was non-Matrix zone. Hmmm…

Also one thing I didn’t quite gather was how Neo manages to bring Trinity back to life? From hacker to healer? 😉

    bah

The getting her back to life is getting out of hand. In the 1st part, trinity does it, and this time its neo. And to top it, it was so dumb.. he actually goes inside her and starts pumping her heart.

They surely could have done without that stunt

  12. powell · June 16, 2003 Reply

Well after watching once I did not get lot of finer details :). But here is my argument for Neo managing to bring Trinity back to life:

Well if a software simulation(which the matrix executes) i.e an agent shooting Trinity and can make her heart stop pumping. Why not software simulation that can trigger heart beat be possible?, Neo is still a hacker not a healer!. He hacks a new program to get her back to life, I think that is how we are supposed to understand :).
