Digital Camera’s and Image Compression
For the past week, I’ve been trying to work with my Olympus D360L, and make it take some good pics. Its more then 3 years old and is can take only pics at 1.3 megapixel resolution. While working with it, I noticed something strange :
– Few images come really really well ( Provided there is good lighting)
– Few of them come pretty OK ( These are the ones with bad light, or things are just way too far away)
– Few come clear, but are plain ugly ( ones with flash, where you can see only things about a meter away and everything else looks dark)
– The puzzling one of all : Ones with bad compression.
I have taken two consecutive pictures of the same thing many times and the JPG compression on my camera is just diff on each of the images. On few of snaps the compression is so bad, the pics are just not usable. What I found odd, was the fact that the compression just screws up randomly on some images. Does anyone know why this happens ?
I’m almost tempted to move to TIFF (Uncompressed) from JPG, though it would mean the capacity of my smart could will drop by 70%.

I’ve had problems with lighting too, but then I figured out that the monitor on your desktop makes a difference too. My office machine has a 19″ Gateway and home machine has a 17″ Daewoo. Both show the image with a different quality.
Consider this Image, I can hardly see my own face in this pic on this monitor but when I one of the laptops in office, the pic is so clear. But yeah, the compression ratio changes too with every image. I guess thats because of the lighting. Try keeping the camera very still at a point, probably on a tripod and then take two clicks.
