That works only if you have ECNR ( Emigration Check Not Required ) Stamp on your passport, which I dont. To get that, I need the the tickets to be shown, which came a bit too late. ( I have to apply before 11am to get it on the same working day )

Overall Passsport sucks.. and Life too

nah!! ECNR sucks big time – spent too much effort (and money) on getting a temp ecnr stamped on one of my programmers passport

If you are a graduate (I *think* getting out of PESIT alive is an equivalent of graduation 😉 all you needed to do was to run across to the Passport office on Brunton road, show them your grad certificate (and two photocopies of the same) and passport, and they stamp your ECNR on the spot.

Should have asked me – I had the same problem in 1997. In those days, one had to stand for hours in a queue – nowadays it is a breeze.

You can get an ECNR if

    1. You have your grad cert
    2. 3 year tax shit paper.

Now I dont have either of them. The reason I still make regular trips to pesit , is to get my Marks cards. Once I get all my marks cards, I can apply for a degree cert, which will take many years to come. I could get a provisional cert, but even for that I need all my marks cards. This has become an issue for my US trip too.

Still trying to get my marks cards out of the univcersity 🙁

    Bangalore University sucks that badly???

    3. Either parent is a graduate.

I got ECNR stamped on my passport when I got a new one this July – the reasoning being that if you are too young to have graduated on your own, then your parents are taken as the standard…. till you graduate.

Here’s an idea – if you haven’t technically “graduated” (i.e. no degree certificate), then why don’t you take one of your parents’ degree certificates along?

Guess it’s too late anyway for Hong Kong…

Hey if you dont have a provisional degree or mark sheet – how the hell did you get a job?

Yahoo! was one of the very few companies what I was allowed to take up when I was in college. The reason being most of the good companies needed 70+. Mine is about 63% and at any point, I had couple of backlogs. Yahoo had no restrictions on branch or marks. So managed to get it, coz most of the companies dont even let the mech guys take up the placement tests.

Even after I passed out, I had 2 backlogs, so I took 2 days off work and wrote the exams. Yahoo is totally ok with my situation.. considering most of the people here are college dropouts

WOW! Really? Both of mine are, and when I asked for my ECNR when I was 15, they wouldn’t give me one. Is this karnataka specific or what?

Not many people care/worry about it. Concordia still has no idea if I’ve graduated or not. All they have are my marksheets upto 6th semester (status when I first filed my application in Nov 2001) and they don’t seem to care about the rest …

I also know of this Software Company in Madras that hired without running _any_ background check whatsoever … until they discovered one of their employees was a high school dropout early last year.

Didn’t you have a canadian PP? I thought you studied/hung out in Alberta or some such during high school … ?

Indeed, holding an indian PP sucks, if not for anything else, just the visas/delays involved 🙁

Both my parents are doctors with a postgrad degree each and ECNR stamped on their passports. Look here – Question 3 in that subsection is-

Quest: Please list who are all eligible for ECNR service.
    Ans :

    d) Spouses and dependent children upto the age of 24 years of Professional degree holders and Gazetted Govt. Servants.

    h) Dependent children upto the age of 24 years of Parents whose passport is classified as ECNR.

I guess I qualified for both.

Well, I looked around and I found http://passport.tn.nic.in/

We didn’t have websites or funky shit when I filed for my PP … and they were like, “Quit begging for too much, stupid kid. You’re getting *some* PP anyway, who the fuck cares if its with or without ECNR … ?” and so I shut up. Too bad I missed out on easing up my ECNR thing. O well …

I wonder if Indian Embassy’s abroad can do it …

Yes, an Indian Embassy abroad can do it but my experience with the Embassy here in Thailand has not been very good – maybe they send third grade people to third world embassies 😀
