Came early and got some decent work done. Am working on perl these days. This is my 1st hand in serious perl programming. Still having generic issues. ( khorgath, thanks for that help on perl )

Why are you wasting your time?

    Perl is evil

perl is powerful, but so is Microsoft.

Tut tut!! you swallowed my bait hook line and sinker, I am disappointed.

BUT since you have swallowed the bait I have to reel you in.

Technically you subject line cannot have qualifier braces hence subject line does not say it all, then nowhere in my post I said anything about PHP.

Now for the rant – why do you want to adopt the Microsoft attitude of one size fitting all? Time you started thinking the Unix way boy !!! If you want to do web apps use PHP if you want to desktop apps use C,C++ if you just need a bit of shell scripting – use… … that is it. All to the above share a very similar syntax and have a nicer learning curve than Perl.

BTW you can do shell scripting as well as Desktop GTK apps with PHP but I personally prefer not to …

OK! Swati is already accusing me of child abuse so I will stop

Did you mean that C/C++ have a nicer learning curve than Perl? Could you please elaborate? TIA.

Sure – I could not get past the Perl for Dummies book NOR was I able to write generic perl scripts to do anything substantially useful even after three months BUT after having programmed in PHP-GTK for about 5 days I shifted to using C++ with GTK and had my app running on the desktop in 3 days. Felt almost like home 😉

I assume you were familiar with C++ before the PHP-GTK experience, and thus the “feeling like home”. I wouldn’t consider that as an good explanation for the smoother learning curve 😉 Even if that was your first C++ programming experience, I would say that PHP-GTK is not real C/C++ programming. Well, that is my personal opinion. Of course, YMMV…

I do not like holy wars of this sort (C vs. C++, perl vs. python, vi vs. emacs etc). But with my short programming experience (5 years, that is, mainly C), I would say that the learning curve of both C/C++ is much steeper that perl/python/php etc. This is definitely not an apples to apples comparison, but almost 95% of my friends who tried perl caught on to it immediately. The most important reason for that IMHO is the “there is more than one way to do it” philosophy of Perl.

Not being “able to write generic perl scripts to do anything substantially useful even after three months” seems to me like an exaggeration 🙂 All programming languages have their strengths and weaknesses. Choosing the right one for a project is a skill which can only be acquired by experience.

On a slighlty curious note, were you trying to achieve the same PHP-GTK functionatlity with Perl?

P.S. I stopped using Perl couple of years back 😉

No I learnt C++ based on my experience of PHP-GTK !!! wierd way to learn BUT I found following all the examples in the GTK manual very easy to follow after I experimented with PHP-GTK. NOTE: I am not counting PHP-GTK as C++ experience I switched to GTK + C++

Lastly – no I was not trying to implement the PHP-GTK functionality with Perl – that is not possible at all (well at least with perl alone) These are two separate incidents

P.S. What I said about perl was pertinent to my experience couple of years back as well 😉
