The rich rivers of peninsular India support a wide variety of fish species that in turn support small carnivores like the Smooth-coated Otter. Most of the watersheds originate from the Western Ghats and are the water backbone of south india. They are found along all major rivers and in reservoirs. Locally they are called neernaai, meaning 'water dog'.
