The soil in mangroves is often highly saline and deficient in oxygen. It is regularly inundated by the tides and frequently water-logged. The mangrove plants have evolved diverse adaptions to tolerate saline conditions, provide extra support, and breathe directly from the air through aerial roots called "pneumatophores" (breathing roots).
