Unlike the west, in India, people cannot afford to have dedicated pasture land for cattle. As most of the land is used for agriculture, cattle in hundreds and thousands are sent into the protected areas for grazing everyday. This intensive grazing pressure degrades forests by soil compaction and suppression of natural plant regeneration. These cattle also compete with wild herbivores for palatable food plants
