Scaling Livejournal using MySQL

brad (LiveJournal founder), seems to have made a kickass presentation about LJ at MySQL Users Conference. If your work involves databases and load-balancing , then you *must* check out his slides. Jeremy has a nice write-up on the talk as well. I put up the ljimages thingy on my site. Its ADDICTIVE.

Crappy Week

It’s been very annoying week. Earlier this week, I was stabbed in the back by someone I work with. What’s worse is, I feel betrayed and used. My ideology took a beating as well. This put me on a bitchy mood all week. I flamed people on lists, was rude to people on messenger and it took a toll on my regular work as well. The long weekend that was suppose to cheer me up, ain’t happening the way I expected it to. hmmm…

Cropping news ?

Amateur photographers like me crop images to enhance parts of the image or to cut off unnecessery distractions. Can journalists do the same to hide parts of the story ? Weather Hobby

My co-worker, Sunil Nagaraj ( if you are quizzer from blr, you might know him) is a weather man. He has been measuring the daily temp(min/max), humidity, dew point, wind speed etc in Bangalore for the last decade. He spends an hour everyday at various weather sites , checking out the weather info of various cities in India. He even has a small weather monitoring kit at home. So earlier this week, he got me interested into lightning strikes when both of us spent more then an hour counting the lightning strikes from my office balcony. He promised me a treat…

Digital Photography : Lessons Learnt (Part 1)

The mega-pixels(mp) in a camera do not mean a thing. ( So please don’t go running after after the new 8mp cameras that are coming out ). Good lens and large CCD/CMOS sensor make all the difference. A 1mp camera with large sensor size can take better pics then 5mp camera with smaller sensor size. When it comes to talking colorful pics, Canon and kodak just kick ass. For everything else there is Nikon. Few of the pics I took using canon S400 are way more colorful then most of my pics from my current nikon camera. Above rule applies…

Tasty Bangalore treats

I visited themadman‘s new restaurant ‘Shiok’ on CMH road the other day. Really nice ambiance with excellent south-east asian food. For those of you who don’t know him, he is a geek turned chef. Read his inspirational story here. Someday.. somewhere… I just might start one. The idea has been itching me for a while now.. It will either be a dessert-only place or a european restaurant. ( maybe the day is not too far away ) So many new restaurants in town and haven’t had time to visit any of them. Visited Shezan ( try the steak) and Bangalore…

Still Disabled

Its been exactly a month since I’ve had the fall and I am still limping around. I felt better after the bed rest and the doc suggested I was all good to go. After 2 – 3 days of walking around it got worse. Went through MRI scan and then the doc confirms that its an injury to the bone. Luckily its not a fracture ( and that means no operations required ). However the only cure is loads and loads of rest ( something that’s hard to get ). Currently going to physiotherapy everyday and walk around with a…

Indian all-electronic general elections

So the dates have been announced and apparently there will be 1 million Electronic Voting machines(EVM). The only information that they provide is As many as 200 technicians at BEL, which also manufactures electronic warfare equipment for India’s military, have been working on the project. … When the EVMs had an experimental outing in five state elections in November, they drew a fascinated reaction from the electorate in rural areas. “You won’t believe the kind of response,” said Mr Simha. … “Some of them were thrilled to punch the machines. I have seen so many happy villagers.” BEL says the…
