you may remember the fantastic generation of French action movies that came out of France a few years ago. Inheriting the tradition of the French fleece from the sixties and mixing it with unprejudiced doses of comedy, headed by savages such as ‘Dobermann’ and the international-style cinema Luc Besson, the Gallic chase and smackdown cinema won over the world. They succeeded in the late nineties. well, movies like ‘Taxi’, ‘Yamakasi’ or ‘District 13’.

The echo died out shortly after, although France has never stopped making good action movies (a good part of the Luc Besson films that continue to reach us are produced in the director’s country of origin). One of the latest samples arrives now exclusively to Netflix:’stray bullet 2‘. If you don’t know the first installment, don’t worry: you can also enjoy it on the platform.

If the first ‘The Stray Bullet’ was a false guilty story in which a mechanic had to clear his name after being accused of a crime he didn’t commit, this sequel is his revenge. Determined to find the two crooked cops who killed his brother and his mentor, our anti-hero sets off on a relentless chase. A conventional argument for a film that, if you have never delved into French action cinema, may surprise you more than you expect.

The brilliance with which the French film action is displayed here in frenetic chases, superbly choreographed and executed fights, and humor and cameos at the most unexpected (and often disconcerting) moments. With a visual neatness that makes films ten times more expensive stand out, ‘The Stray Bullet 2’ inherits much of what is good about oriental genre cinema (which swept the neighboring country in the nineties) and regurgitates it in a genuinely French product. . bon appetit.

After Gamora’s disappearance, Star-Lord no longer has a heart for anything. So Drax and Gamora decide to arrange for him to celebrate Christmas, something he hasn’t known since childhood. So the two most “first-degree” Guardians of the Galaxy embark on their way to Earth, especially since they know the ideal gift to bring back to their friend. Problem: the gift does not necessarily agree. The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special marks the end of Phase IV of Marvel Studios… in joy and good humor?

Preamble: Did you say “joy”?

It has happened since the last “personal” appearance of the Guardians of the Galaxy. In 2017, the day after the release of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.2, everyone expected to find the team for a third film two or three years later. Meanwhile, the fate of director James Gunn has been shaken several times in different directions. He was landed overnight from the Disney empire on the strength of old yet disavowed tweets, then he had time to sign with the competition and commit to a film (The Suicide Squad) then a TV series (Peacemaker) before Disney (noting the lack of enthusiasm of the actors to continue the saga without him) decides on a big pardon so that he can return SON Guardians of the Galaxy III and even this Guardians of the Galaxy: Happy Holidays (Guardians of the Galaxy Holidays Special) which will be available on Disney+ from this Friday, November 25. This could be the happy outcome of a reconciliation… if in the meantime fate had not shaken the cards in another direction: here is James Gunn, who has become the equivalent of Kevin Feige at Warner and the great architect of the DC universe at the screen… Something to heighten the perception of this reunion.

years of mourning

Add to this that since 2019 Marvel Studios have been busy managing a period of mourning: a good number of films or TV series are busy mourning the memory of Iron Man or Black Widow, when it’s not downright reality that goes beyond fiction and that Wakanda Forever find themselves dealing with not only the disappearance of King T’Challa but also of the actor who played him, Chadwick Boseman. Add the financial results not the expected height, the landing of boss Bob Chapek to better remind the boss before Bob Iger urgently… Add in addition that the whole planet has just passed two years due to pandemic, confinements, restrictions and now finds itself alert such as it has not known since the height of the Cold War and we will understand that the time is not really “at the bamboche”, as the other said. Not the ideal time to release a deliberately innocent and naive Christmas TV movie. Not the ideal moment, certainly, but the necessary moment, certainly…

Mantis to the max

Let’s not hide it: the scenario of The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special fits on a postage stamp. If you’ve seen the trailer play, you basically know the whole story and can guess the rest. OK. But the thing is assumed. James Gunn and his flock do not seek to convince you by the twists and turns of a scenario with drawers or the shock of a key revelation. No. This is above all a “feel good” TV movie where the two most stupid Guardians there are try to do good (or at least the best they can) to please Peter Quill and make him meet his idol. The TV movie in particular is a rare opportunity to shine for Mantis (Pom Klementieff). On previous films it has most often been reduced to a few “one-liners” in reaction to the comments of others, like “Yes, use knives”. Here, the character takes the initiative and part of the story rests on his shoulders (while Drax provides the necessary muscle). Mantis breaks out with a big smile and it’s hard to believe that it’s just a simple acting game. Pom Klementieff tangibly gets off on occupying the foreground and she finally has more room to reflect all the ambiguity of the character. Mantis is a nice heroine capable of being threatening without even realizing it.

Meetings

Admitting that you have not watched the trailer, we will not mention the role of the guest-star of choice who joins the Guardians on the screen and who plays (a little) with his image. But overall it works (unless of course you want to write theses on the screenplay). This holiday special of about forty minutes (roughly the time of an episode of Wanda vision Where Loki) manages to stage the joy of reunion. Whether it’s Drax and Mantis surprised when they arrive in Los Angeles to be happily welcomed by a few earthlings or even that of Star-Lord in the end, even if things do not necessarily go as planned . As long as we like the Guardians (but if you don’t like them, why the hell are you inflicting reading this article), we’re happy to find them again, without the ambient pathos. And they too, characters as actors, are visibly happy to find themselves (the TV movie was shot from the end of 2021 and the ambient feeling undoubtedly reflects the joy of the actors to find the sets).

Laugh life

Then certainly one will be able to smile (for the blow in corner) of a few grams of tartufferie which consist in titling “Holiday Special” to spare all the confessions while alluding only to Christmas in the contents of the telefilm. But it’s no big deal. Without extravagance, The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special serves as an official conclusion to Phase IV, the period of mourning ofEngage, of Aunt May and the others, of Chadwick Boseman or William Hurt. An innocent way to find the way to a smile. We will also laugh at the mention of a few terms related to competition. Terms that take on particular significance when you know where Gunn has gone in the meantime. But whatever. And that’s probably the “Christmas spirit” that haunts this special: whatever the quarrels of the past or the competition to come, you might as well leave them aside and find yourself. At least while it lasts. No doubt that if it was an attempt over 1h30 or 2h the result would end up going around in circles, but in 45 minutes James Gunn manages to make people smile, to put aside the cynicism of everyday life and to leave us on this “feel good” impression. These days, it’s downright good to take.

A whirlwind of passions declared or repressed, of complexes hardly forgotten by social conventions, of painful solitude, of lives canceled without realizing it, of human beings adrift, of unsuspected shipwrecks and words flying like stilettos —and sometimes like paintbrushes. because suddenly in separate tables (separate tables, 1954), initially two one-act plays performed at the same time with an intermission, cruelty is swept away by tenderness, compassion prepares for shame, condemnation is pardoned by a very deep humanity. no one remembers anymore Terence Rattigan, a formidable comediographer capable of mixing with elegant sophistication the surgery of the human condition of Flaubert, Balzac or Proust with the sentimental and steely irony of Oscar Wilde, Noel Coward or Somerset Maugham. But in the ’30s, ’40s and ’50s, before the radicals came angry young men captained by john osborne and erase Rattigan and associates from the critical map and from the stage, he dominated the scene on both sides of the Atlantic, from the West End to Broadway. the browning version, The Winslow Boy, a deep blue sea and you are separate tables they triumphed, quite rightly, in all the theaters of the world.

Believe me, what works on stage may not work on a screen, because in cinema rhetoric is ballast, parliaments are dead weight, and even brilliant epigrams evaporate with the taste of mothballs.

Adapting a play, in this case two one-act plays separated by an intermission, is an extremely dangerous challenge. From the face you have a very solid structure —what is known as theatrical carpentry—, with that division, generally in three acts, that scriptwriters prefer to any other. Add in the drawing of powerful characters, main and secondary, of situations and twists, along with well-wound dialogue, and you have all the materials on which to base a movie. Of course, then come the problems. The action of a theatrical piece tends to be static, just what a movie should not aspire to, although many filmmakers and critics enjoy it and praise it without rate.. Something similar usually happens with characters: their construction is certainly solid, but their development is either very subtle or doesn’t really exist. And we are left with dialogue, and believe me, what works on stage may not work on a screen, because in cinema rhetoric is ballast, speeches are dead weight, and even brilliant epigrams evaporate with the flavor of mothballs. If you allow me an example, scripts by Lubitsch and his student Wilder They prove how you have to know a lot about alchemy to adapt, without big betrayals, plays and turn them into movies. Image vs. Word. That is the equation, that is the lawsuit, that is the challenge. Rattigan himself along with John Gay (Lancaster appears to have had scenes rewritten by John Michael Hayes, a Hitchcock enrolled screenwriter) wrote the film by fusing the two works together in a juggling re-profiling exercise, creating essential new characters and situations. A true and impressive tour de force.

Burt Lancaster He was the one who in 1958, through his production company Hecht-Hill-Lancaster, decided to shoot Rattigan’s play. Black and White, a luxury cast headed by Lancaster himself and Deborah Kerrthe undisputed queen, with Eleanor Parker and Bette Davis, from melodrama, rita hayworth into one of his most emotionally devastating characters, and reserving an essential character for David Niven, which composes his best work in the cinema -he won the Oscar- offering extraordinary moments of emotion, fragility, fake mystification, shame and confession. All the actors have essential characters and they all act formidably, with a special mention for Wendy Hillerwhich won an Oscar.

Mann complained bitterly that the actor-producer retraced the film, depriving it of certain moments to expand his character.

Lancaster gave the address to Delbert Mann, another indisputable success, because his solid craftsmanship, his humble wisdom to yield to the extraordinary script and his understanding of the game of the actors-characters allows the beautiful, cruel and exciting brilliance of the text and its intricacies, the sincerity and physicality of the incarnation of the actors with their characters immerse us in the world map of human beings, in a trail of lives that Terence Rattigan masterfully drew. Having said that, Mann complained bitterly that the actor-producer retraced the film, depriving it of certain moments to expand his character.. It may or may not be true, but as seen in theaters and seen almost seventy years later, separate tables It borders on the qualification of a masterpiece.

Two common threads lead us into this human zoo. The first is the one that allows the action to progress, because it is of a suspensive nature, and of narrative moral suspense, and follows the maneuvers of the character of Major Pollock (Niven) to prevent you from reading a newspaper that compromises your whole life. Rattigan and the film appeal at this point to puritanism, intolerance, to the secrecy of certain loves that leads to imposture and the personal and social abyss. A very expensive subject for Rattigan. The other thread resides in the turbines of the film. The devastated and prisonerless territory of love, of the lacerating wounds it leaves, of the painful memories of him, of the ballast of reproaches, of the ashes that are fanned by jealousy, desires, absences. John Malcolm (Lancaster) is still consumed by a past love, set on fire throughout but not consumed, especially when he reunites with Anne Shankland (Hayworth), while he is engaged to Pat Cooper (Wendy Hiller), who runs the hotel and contemplate that combat with the melancholy of one for whom, win or lose, nothing will be the same, in his days and memories. Possessive mothers, emotionally emasculated daughters, spinsters and loners all play on one board in which memories, hypocrisies, emotions, malevolence and generosity are exchanged the trump cards of a game with rigid rules, which must be broken if a fresh air of freedom and life is to sweep away the charged human clouds of the Beauregard Hotel in Bournemouth.

The study is published in JAMA.

Long term shortness of breath is a common cause of ongoing suffering that often occurs with advanced serious illness and at the end of life. COPD can cause breathlessness by damaging the lungs and airways and for seriously ill people with severe long term breathlessness, physical activity is often a challenge.

“Many people live with shortness of breath. It is distressing that no better treatment exists, but based on the results we’ve seen, we cannot generally recommend giving morphine to people with chronic breathlessness,” says Magnus Ekström, a researcher in Palliative Medicine and Pulmonary Medicine at Lund University in Sweden and Chief Physician in Pulmonary Medicine at Blekinge Hospital.

The researchers included 156 patients, each for three weeks, with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) who suffered from severe long term breathlessness. In the first week, the participants were randomised into three groups, two to regular low doses of once daily morphine (8 milligrams daily or 16 milligrams daily), and a third control group that received a placebo.

During the subsequent two weeks, participants were randomized to receive either an additional 8 milligrams of morphine or placebo, in addition to the previous treatment. This was done to investigate the efficacy of the treatment and the risk of side effects resulting from an increased dose of morphine. The treatment was ‘double-blind’, which means the participants and those who treated them didn’t know what treatment each group was receiving.

“Given the prevalence of long term breathlessness across the world, it is crucial that we find ways that safely and predictably reduce the suffering that this causes people, often for years,” says David Currow, a palliative medicine physician at the University of Wollongong in Australia whose team worked on the study as a part of a national program to improve symptom control of people with advanced, life-limiting illnesses.

The researchers then compared the groups to see how they rated their experience of shortness of breath. With the help of motion sensors, the researchers also measured the participants’ physical activity during the study.

“Some probably expected that the study would show that regular, low dose morphine may allow people to be more physically active. Unfortunately, across all participants, we did not see this. We didn’t see any improvements in terms of the worst breathlessness that participants experienced,” says Magnus Ekström.

According to Ekström, the use of regular low dose morphine for severe long term breathlessness should not be widely used in healthcare as a treatment for groups that experience chronic, activity-limiting shortness of breath.

“However, the study should not be interpreted as that morphine does not provide any relief to patients with severe shortness of breath at rest, or in palliative care at the end of life. We didn’t investigate that in the study. In most cases, our patients did not have shortness of breath at rest. Clinical experience shows that at the end of life and in crisis situations, morphine treatment can help,” says Magnus Ekström.

The next step will be to investigate in greater detail whether certain groups respond better to morphine, as well as which ones are at a higher risk of experiencing side effects.

In 2014, Facebook (now called Meta) paid $22 billion for WhatsApp, and the first change he made was to remove the $1 annual charge for the messaging application. Now, in the midst of the crisis that the company is suffering, the measures to compensate the damage could lead to WhatsApp no longer being free.

As we will remember, just a week ago Mark Zuckerberg, CEO and founder of Goal, had to lay off nearly 11,000 employees. This is due to a disastrous quarter in financial terms, as the businessman’s desire to create the “metaverse” They have led him to lose millions of dollars. Even his own heritage, which in 2021 held him among the 5 richest in the world, today it is below 25th place.

For this type of situation, managers must make difficult decisions. And what Mark has revealed about his instant messaging application would be that lifeline that he is looking for so much.

A few days ago, Zuckerberg informed Meta employees that both WhatsApp and Messenger “would drive the company’s next wave of sales growth”. This move arose to counteract the negative effects that the ambitious project of the metaverse is leaving, which has already received criticism about it.

Will WhatsApp stop being free? Mark Zuckerberg plans to integrate subscriptions into the app

“We talk a lot about very long-term opportunities like the metaverse, but the reality is that business messaging will probably be the next big pillar of our business as we work to further monetize WhatsApp and Messenger”, held to Reuters.

In this sense, what Zuckerberg intends with his applications would be to integrate a subscription, something that Elon Musk with Twitter has at stake. Although the owner of Meta did not provide many details about the strategy he will follow, it is most likely that he will add advertising on the platform. Even the membership plans could carry exclusive functions, that is, they will not be available for the free version.

Currently, the messaging app does not have a version premium with subscription payments open to the public. However, there is a paid version of the platform available only for some specific accounts in business plans; called “WhatsApp Business”.

Will WhatsApp stop being free? Mark Zuckerberg plans to integrate subscriptions into the app

Talk about the version premium of the messaging platform with different features, among which is the ability to generate a personalized link that can include the name of the company in the URL that is generated to share and start a direct chat in the application.

As long as the premium subscription is maintained, WhatsApp Business users will be able to change the link name every 90 days and no other company will be able to claim that link as theirs. When the payment is stopped, it will be available again to whoever decides to purchase it.

On the other hand, those who have the platform in its premium version will also have access to a feature aimed especially at customer service. With the monthly subscription it will be possible to link up to 10 devices in order to better manage the direct messages that the company receives.

Surely WhatsApp is not going to stop being free, and anyone who wants to use it without paying will be able to do so. But, will we have all the features available? We will have to wait for the company’s final decisions.

“I met you tearing the chest of death one day”, says the song by Silvio Rodríguez in honor of Pablo Milanés.

“Pablo”, that is the simple title of the song that the Cuban singer-songwriter Silvio Rodríguez published on his blog in homage to Pablo Milanés, his late compatriot and companion of the Cuban trova.

Milanés died Monday night at the age of 79, in Madrid, Spain, after spending more than a week in a hospital for a series of recurring infections.

Perhaps no other singer was more musically linked to Pablo Milanés than Silvio Rodríguez.

Both went among the founders and main exponents of the Nueva Trova Cubanathe genre that emerged in the late 1960s, deeply rooted in the reality of the Cuban Revolution, encompassing social, political, and personal issues.

In 1984, Rodríguez and Milanés released a record of their joint concert in Argentina called “En vivo”. And in 1985, Rodríguez participated in the long-playing “Dear Pablo”, in which singers of the stature of Joan Manuel Serrat and Mercedes Sosa also performed.

In his blog Segunda Cita, Silvio Rodríguez allows his unpublished song “Pablo”, composed in 1969, to be the only comment he makes about Pablo Milanés, but the lyrics describe with poetic eloquence what he feels for his friend.

“You are a space that becomes spineless and loses itself in the joy of becoming”, says a stanza.

“I met you stuck to the wall of heaven one day. You were then carrying a guajira under your arm and walking, walking,” ends the song by Rodríguez, who had a relationship peppered with ups and downs with the late singer-songwriter.

Although the popularity of Nueva Trova declined in subsequent decades, the music and presence of Pablo Milanés continued to captivate new generations of singers.

The Mexican Lucero shared a video in which she sings one of Milanés’ famous songs, “In what quiet way”, accompanied by the words: “May heaven receive you singing.”

Although he was initially committed to the revolutionary movement in Cuba, Milanés became one of the most critical public figures of his country’s government.

He raised his voice against the repression of the anti-government citizen protests in July 2021, advocating for full freedom on the island.

Last September, he joined a hundred Cuban artists and intellectuals who signed a manifesto calling for changes in the country.

Despite his opposition to the government, Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel, lamented the death of Milanés, acknowledging that “one of our greatest musicians physically disappears”. He also sent condolences to his widow and children.
